COFFIN, Peter, Esq., ag. 50 in 1680, �54 in 1684-5, �83 in 1713, s. of Tristram from Brixton, Devon, (whose aut. attests the Bishop's transcripts for that parish, 1639), was bred under Mr. Valentine Hill at Oyster River, taxed 1650, having app. been put in charge in place of Darby Field. Of 20 purchasers of Nantucket, 1659, seven were his and wife's immed. rel., but he did not go, or if he went kept up his bus. in Dover; yet settled most of his ch. there and app. was an officeholder there. In 1653 Elder Starbuck deeded him a half int. in a mill priv. He was soon engaged in the Ind. trade. An import. fig. in H.H. hist. for half a century. Picking a course bet. two sides with attention to the law's letter, he was highly trusted and much employed. Auditing was commonly entrusted to him. In 1667 by contract he built the fort around the meet. ho. 100 ft. sq., with flanders. Com.t.e.s.c. in 1669; assoc. in the County Ct. 1670; J.P. from 1683-4; a judge of the highest court from 1697; and for one yr. chief justice. Councillor from 1692, except one yr. when he declined to serve, until his death. Under Mass. he was Rep. in 1672, under N.H. in 1680. In Dover he was selectm., treas., Lieut.; in Exeter moderator, Capt. Taken but spared by the Ind. in the Cochecho massacre, he rem. to Exeter, where he d. 21 Mar. 1715. He m. Abigail Starbuck, their ch. not clearly kn. Having had his finger in numerous estates, no finger was in his, - no will, no adm. The Province vital records give 7 ch: Abigail, b. 20 Oct. 1657, m. Daniel Davison. Peter, b. 20 Aug. 1660, m. 15 Aug. 1682 Elizabeth Starbuck, d. 1699 on Nantucket. In 1724 and 1725 Ebenezer Gardner, Jedediah and Abigail Fitch, and Jemima Coffin, unm., all of Sherburn, deeded thirds of 100 a. given by 'our grandf. to our f.' Peter C. in 1696. Jethro, b. 16 Sep. 1663, blacksm., m. Mary Gardner, Nant. In 1713 his f.'s gr. of 240 a. in Mendon, 1672, was confirmed to him, where he settled. Will 29 July - 10 Aug. 1726 names w. Mary, ch. John, Josiah, Robert, Margaret, Priscilla, Abigail, Tristram, Edward, Elizabeth. Besides these the Nant. trad. gives three, Parnel, Eliphalet, Robert. [ref 22]

COFFIN, COFFYN, COFFENS, Peter, son of Mr. Tristram, a pioneer of Massachusetts who resided at Haverhill, Newbury, Salisbury and Nantucket, believed to be of the family at Brixham, England. settled at Dover in his early manhood and was a citizen of value. Signed petition to Gen. Court 10 Oct, 1665. He deposed 19 Jan. 1660, aged about 30 years, relative to the methods of the lumber business, and sales he made for Lt. Richard Cooke to Elias Stileman. Wife Abigail; ch.: Abigail, Peter, Jethro, Trustraum, Edward, Judith, Elizabeth. He d. 21 March, 1715, at Exeter, in his 85th year; "late judge of his majesty's superior court of judicature, and first member of his majesty's council of the province, a gentleman very serviceable both in church and state."
