Captain John Gilbert, believed to be the son of William, settled in Windsor, Connecticut, and was admitted a freeman May 21, 1657. The general court sold to him for ten pounds March 11, 1662-63, land lying between that of Captain Richard Lord and of John Culich "at ye landing place on the Rivulet both parcels being or lying in ye south meadow at Hartford." The court allowed him eleven pounds in consideration of a horse "that dyed in the country's service." He married, May 6, 1647, Amy, daughter of Thomas and Dorothy Lord, of Hartford. She was dau. of Thomas, bapt. at Towcester, co. Northampton, England., 30 Nov. 1626; d. 8 Jan. 1691. Will 1 Aug. 1690; to wife, land given us by our Mosther Lord; sons Thomas, Joseph, James; dau. Captain John Gilbert, brother of Jonathan, of Hartford, m. Amy, daughter of Thomas and Dorothy Lord of Hartford, May 6, 1647, was admitted freeman May 21, 1657. The Court sold to him for �10, March 11, 1662-3, land lying between that of Capt. Richard Lord and of C. John Culick, and at "ye landing place on the Rivulet, both parcels being or lying in ye South Meadow at Hartford." May 19, 1663, the "Generl Court" allowed him "eleven pounds out of the Publique Treasury, for and in consideration of his horse that dyed in the country's service. His will, of Aug. 1, 1690, names his wife Amy, children. Estate, �417.19.10. Children: John, John, Elizabeth, Thomas, Amy, Joseph, Dorothy, James. [ref 60:2-8]

John Gilbert, the immigrant ancestor, brother of Jonathan and Josiah Gilbert, and perhaps son of William, was born in England, and settled early at Windsor, Connecticut, where he was admitted a freeman May 21, 1657. The general court sold to him for �10, March 11, 1662-63, land lying between property of Captain Richard Lord and of John Church, "at ye landing place on the Rivulet both parcesl being or lying in ye south meadow at Hartford." The court allowed him �11 in consideration of a horse "that dyed in the country's service," proving that he had a military record. He married, May 8, 1647, Amy, daughter of Thomas and Dorothy (Bulkely) Lord. Her father was one of the first settlers of Hartford. WILL OF JOHN GILBERT 1 Aug 1690 - 13 Jan 1690/1 (inventory):

I John Gilbert of Hartford do make this my last Will & Testament: I give unto my wife the Lott in the long meadow, 3 acres given us by our Mother Lord; also �10 and the use of my Homsted during life. I give to my son Thomas Land in the long meadow I bought of John Blackleach. I give to my son Joseph My Homested, with all the appurtenances, to enjoy one-half at my decease, and the whole after the decease of my Wige; also my little pasture I bought of Mr. Richard Edwards; also Woodland I bought of Daniel Garrett. I give to my son James my Lott in the Pine Field (abtout 4 1/2 acres) which I bought with my huse. I give my daughter Dorothy Palmer, in addition to what I have already given her, the sum of �10, within 2 years after my decease. I appooint my wife and my son Thomas Gilbert Executors.
