Notes for Lydia, 2nd wife of Thomas Gilbert

The court record does not identify Lydia Gilbert, but she almost certainly was Thomas Gilbert Jr.'s wife. We can be reasonably sure of this, for Lydia Gilbert was accused of using witchcraft to kill Henry Stiles of Windsor, who had been Thomas Gilbert Jr.'s former employer (Gilbert Fam. pp. 1419). If this conclusion is correct, Thomas Gilbert Jr. had at least three wives: Mary James, whom he married in 1639 in England; Lydia _____, who was executed for witchcraft in 1654; and Katherine (Chapin) Bliss of Springfield, Mass., whom he married in 1655.

Henry Stiles, a boarder at the home of Thomas and Lydia Gilbert, was shot and killed by neighbor Thomas Allyn. Allyn was tried and convicted of death by misadventure: "Thomas Allyn, thou art indited by the name of Thomas Allyn that not having that due fear of God before thine eyes for the preservation of the life of thy neighbor, didst suddenly, negligently, carelessly cock thy piece, and carry the piece just behind thy neighbor, which piece being charged and going off in thine hand, slew thy neighbor to the great dishonor of God, breach of the peace, and loss of a member of this commonwealth. What sayest thou, art thou guilty or not guilty?"
Three years later, Lydia Gilbert was accused of causing the death of Stiles: "Lydea Gilburt thou art here indited by that name of Lydea Gilburt that not having the feare of god before thy Eyes thou hast of late years or still dust give Entertainment to Sathat [Satan] the greate Enemy of god and mankind and by his helpe hast killed the Body of Henry Styles besides other witchcrafts for which according to the law of god and the Established Law of this commonwealth thou Deservest to Dye."
Lydia was convicted in Windsor on 28 Nov 1654 to death by hanging (no witch was ever burned at the stake in America). While there is no record of her hanging, which would have been prompt, there is also no record of anyone at that time escaping the sentence "thou Deservest to Dye", either.

Lydia was the fifth victim in New England to be hung for witchcraft, following Alice Young in 1647, Mary Johnson 1648, John Carrington and wife Joan 1652.
