Notes for Benjamin LIBBY | ||||||||||
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - BENJAMIN LIBBY, born in Berwick, Me., about 1735; bap. Aug. 1735; married, 13 March 1760, ELIZABETH SMITH, daughter of Capt. John Smith of Berwick. He engaged in the coasting trade. Some years before the Revolution, he settled at Frenchman's Bay, on the coast of what is now Hancock County. It was said by his son Benjamin that he with a neighbor named Clark, built the first wharf on that bay, and the first vessel that sailed from it. During the Revolution he was driven away by the British. He left his property and fled in an open boat some 300 miles along the coast, and landed in safety at York Beach. He afterward settled on a farm in Kittery. He died in the year 1805. His widow died with her son Ichabod, in Tuftonborough, N. H., (where it is thought her husband also died), about 1824. Children 1760-abt 82: Hanson, Thankful, Anna, Betsey, Experience, Ichabod, Sarah, Margaret, Benjamin, Polly, Harriet.
