WILLIAM BLACK, born circa 1691 (MPC IV:48), living 1 Jan 1727/8 (YP #1199), son of Black Will, the freed slave of John Shapleigh, and Alice (Hanscom) Metherell. William was the grandson of Thomas Hanscom and Mary (___) Batchelder, wife of Reverend Batchelder. This Mary is said to be the model for Hester Prynne in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, as she was made to wear a red letter "A" on her clothing at all times as punishment for her adultery. (Info from Joseph "Bob" Haswell, CFAA). Will Jr changed his name to William Black and the couple, with their son William, moved to the Harpswell area by 1739. They were the first settlers on what was at first known as Will's Island. Later purchased by a MA man, the island became Bailey's Island. The Blacks, who were squatters, had to move to neighboring Orr's Island where some of William Black's descendants still live (MHSQ, vol. 27, No. 2, 1987). [ref 74:57]
