| - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ABNER5 CLEMENTS (James4, Job3, Job2, Robert1), born in Somersworth, N. H., about 1721, died there, 4 July 1773. He married, probably in Berwick, Me., about 1742, Elizabeth Randall, born about 1720, died after 1774, daughter of Richard and Leah (Stone) Randall. After his marriage, Abner Clements lived in Berwick, until about 1769. Receiving from his father's estate in 1764, one-half his property in Somersworth, Dover, etc., he later moved across the river to Somersworth. Since he was living in Berwick, at the time that Tate enumerated the inhabitants of Somersworth, his family is not given in the diary, but Tate does say of him, "Mr. Abner Clements of Somersworth Dy'd on Sunday July ye 4th & was buried on Monday July ye 5th, 1773." He also, was an heir to the property of his uncle Daniel, by the terms of his father, James Clements's, deed to Daniel Clements. Children 1747-54: James, Margaret, Richard, Aaron. [ref 88:142] Abner Clements served in the French War. He was a private in the trainband, the First Company of Militia in Berwick under Major John Hill, in 1757 (MA archives 95:370) [ref 88:142] "We Abner Clements of Berwick in the County of York ... husbandman, & Elizabeth the wife of the said Abner the only heirs and Surviving children of Richard Randle of Berwick, decd ... sell ... to John Sullivan", [schoolmaster of Berwick] "land ... in ... Berwick granted by the town of Kittery to Richard Randle, May 10, 1703", 9 Sept. 1751 (York co deeds 29:200). [ref 88:143] Miles Thompson of Berwick, conveys, to Abner Clements of Berwick, land there, 1 July 1752 (York co deeds 32:244). [ref 88:143] Samuel Hooper of Berwick, conveys, to Abner Clements of Berwick, husbandman, land there; Elizabeth Hooper also signs, 10 Feb. 1753. (York co deeds 32:243). [ref 88:143] Sarah Door, of a new township lying at the head of the town of Berwick, conveys, to Abner Clements of Berwick, yeoman, land in Berwick, 17 July 1761. (York co deeds 36:225). [ref 88:143] Joseph Stone of Berwick, conveys, to Abner Clements, of Berwick, land there, on, 2 Aug 1759, and, 2 June 1762; Esther Stone, wife of Joseph Stone, signs both deeds (York co deeds 39:150,151.. [ref 88:143] Joseph Pike, Moses Carr, and Moses Stevens, trustees of the estate of Col. Paul Wentworth, convey, to Abner Clements of Berwick, land in same, 6 Dec. 1762 (York co deeds 38:267). [ref 88:143] Humphrey Chadbourne, executor of the last will of Humphrey Chadbourne, late of Berwick, dec'd, conveys, to Abner Clements of Berwick, land there, 16 May 1764 (York co deeds 38:268). [ref 88:143] On 25 July 1768, Abner Clements of Berwick, Me., Dodivah Ham of Dover, N. H., Nathaniel Ham of Dover, Tristram Heard of Rochester, exchange, land in Rochester, with Richard Downing and John Hoyt of Newington (Province NH deeds 80:240, 90:178). [ref 88:143] Abner Clements of Somersworth, yeoman, conveys, to Tristram Heard of Rochester, land in Rochester, one half the lot which honored father, James Clements, late of s'd Somersworth dec'd, bought of Isaac Watson, 3 Oct. 1771 (Rockingham co deeds 105:438). [ref 88:143] Elizabeth Clements of Somersworth, N. H., widow, "in consideration of the Love and affection I bear unto my Son Richard Clements of Berwick, in the County of York, yeoman," quits to him all right to land in Berwick, bounded partly by land of her late husband, Abner Clements, which land descended to the said Elizabeth from her father Richard Randall, 18 Apr. 1774 (York co deeds 43:229). [ref 88:143] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - WILL of ABNER CLEMENTS, 25 Jun 1773 - 11 Aug 1773: In the name of God Amen, this twentyfifth day of June Anno Domini one Thousand seven hundred and seventy three I Abner Clements of the Town of Somersworth in the County of Strafford ... husbandman being very sick and weak in body ... do make and ordain this my last will and testament ... IMPRIMIS, I give and bequeath to my dearly beloved wife Elizabeth the Improvement of one Third of all my Lands in Somersworth aforesaid and in Berwick in the county of York Me during her natural Life. ITEM, I give and bequeath to my said wife Elizabeth the use and Improvement of all my household furniture during her natural Life, and after her decease I give and bequeath the same to my beloved Daughter Margaret. ITEM, I give and bequeath to my said wife Elizabeth three cows, three sheep and all my Hogs. ITEM, I give and bequeath to my beloved son Richard the one half of all my lands in Berwick aforesaid with one half of the buildings thereon standing and the one half of my Interest in the Fowling Marsh so called in said Berwick ... to him his heirs and assigns forever except the Improvement of part thereof as aforesaid. ITEM, I give and bequeath to my beloved son Aaron the other half of all my Lands in Berwick.... ITEM, I give and bequeath to my said Wife Elizabeth the Improvement of one Third of my house and barn standing on my homestead where I now live so long as she remains my Widow. ITEM, I give and bequeath to my beloved Son James all my homestead where I now live with all the buildings thereon standing except the Improvement of part thereof as aforsaid to him his heirs and assigns forever. ITEM, It's my Will that my said son James pay to my servant Peter Grant one Yoke of Cattle four years old and one good suit of Apparel if he faithfully serve as a labourer with my said Wife Elizabeth till he be twenty one years old. ITEM, It's my Will that my said son James give to Hannah Donald one three year old heifer and one good suit of apparel if she serves my said Wife Elizabeth till she be Eighteen years old. ITEM, I give and bequeath all my Right Title and Interest to and in all the lands now in the possession of my Uncle Daniel Clements and his Wife to my said three Sons viz. Richard, Aaron and James to be equally divided between them (after the decease of my said Uncle and his Wife) to them their heirs and assigns forever. ITEM, I give and bequeath to my said beloved Daughter Margaret one three year old heifer which is now in Berwick and two sheep out of my flock. ITEM, I give and bequeath to my said Son Aaron one Cow which is in Berwick and two Sheep out of my flock. ITEM, I give and bequeath to my said Wife Elizabeth and to my said son James my horse between them. ITEM, I give and bequeath to my said Son Richard one yoke of steers two years old and two sheep. ITEM, I give and bequeath to my said Son Aaron one Yoke of Steers two years old and two Sheep. ITEM, I give and bequeath to my said Son James all the rest of my Stock of Creatures, as Cattle Sheep kine. ITEM, It's my Will that my said son Richard pay to my said Daughter Margaret to the value of ten Dollars in Lumber or Cattle or such things as he can get within seven years after my decease. ITEM, It's my Will that my said son Aaron pay to my said Daughter Margaret to the value of Ten Dollars.... ITEM, Its my Will that my said son James pay to my said Daughter Margaret to the value of twenty Dollars.... ITEM, I give and bequeath to my three sons viz. Richard Aaron and James all my Utensils for husbandry to be equally divided between them. ITEM, It's my Will that my said Son James pay all my lawful debts that he receives to his own use all lawful debts due to me. ITEM, It's my Will that my said son James bury my Wife Elizabeth decently if she dies my Widow. ITEM, all the Rest of my Real and Personal Estate I give and bequeath to my said son James. ITEM, I give and bequeath to my two said Sons Richard and Aaron my colt at Berwick to be equally between them. ITEM, I do likewise ... ordain my said son James sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament ... and said Elizabeth Wife to said Abner Clements doth by these presents freely and fully assent and consent to this Will and Testament as here written or she freely and willingly owns and acknowledges this to be her Will and Testament.
