NATHANIEL, Salem, s. of Richard, not b. in Eng. was an innholder, m. Hannah Collins, it is said, had only d. wh. d. bef. him; was chos. deac. 24 Nov. 1689 of that ch. at the village now Danvers, where the devil had his great triumphs, many of the trials of the witches being held at his ho.; was freem. 1690, and lieut. d. early in 1719. From him, thro. fem. line, descend. the late emin. mathemat. Nathaniel Bowditch, translat. of La Place, all whose ch. bear this fam. name. Young's Chron. of Mass. 178. Nathaniel wh. perish. in shipwr. 1 Apr. 1683, may have been his s. [ref 20]

Dea. Nathaniel Ingersoll, yeoman; born in 1632 or 1633; served in Narragansett war; married Hannah Collins March 25, 16--; she was his wife in 1709; he died Jan. 27, 1718-9; child: a dau. [ref 27:1-131]

after his father died, went to live on the "Orchard Farm of Gov. Endicott, that he might the better learn to carry on the farm left him by his father"

parish and church meetings were held in Nathaniel's home and in 1673 he was allowed to sell "bear and syder by the quart for the tyme whyle the farmers are building of their maeeting house and on Lord's days afterwards"

1 Mar 1692 the first hearings of the witch trials were held in Nathaniel's tavern and he seems to have been an accuser in at least seven cases

will: "for the consideration of the great help he had been while living with him, and after he had left," he bequeaths all the remaining part of his whole estate, both real and personal, except a lot of two acres
