Caleb, b. �1684, taxed Str. Bk. 1708, 1713 (and farm), went to Scarboro for a time, and app. liv. in Greenl. 1723-5. M. Rebecca Hinkson who was adm. to Portsm. No. Ch. July 1715. Ab. 1731 he was liv. on Hinkson land at Scarb. and depos. there in Apr. 1735, ag. 51, that he was at Dunstan 20 yrs. bef., improv. land under Mr. Elliot and built and occup. a ho. until driven off by the Millikens. W. bur. at Scarb. 25 June 1759, he 16 Mar. 1767. 6 ch. bp., incl. Caleb. [ref 22]

Tradition claims this surname to be but a corruption of Grafton, but we have not seen proof of such mutation. The first of this family of whom we have record was CALEB GRAFFAM, who settled in Scarborough in 1714. From 1727 to 1730 he was tenant of William Vaughan, of Portsmouth, on part of the old Robert Elliot estate. He removed to Windham, where he survived until 1783, being a very old man. [ref 66:697]
