Alexander Gordon (Alexander3, Daniel2, Alexander1), born Salem, N.H. 7 Apr 1750, d. at Grand Isle, Vt. Sep 1802; shot himself. Married at Norwich, Conn. Mary Hyde, b. 22 Oct 1756, d. between 1808-13 at Grand Isle. She was the dau. of Jacob and Hannah (Hazen) Hyde. "Enl. 26 Nov 1775 served as Sergeant" (NH Papers XXX:438). His name appears on a Muster Roll of Captain Elijah Babcocks Co. in Maj. John Brown's Detachment. Now in the United Colonies Service. Dated at Camp near Quebec, 12th Day of Feby. 1776. Alexander Gordon was Lieut. in Capt. Jacob Wood's Co., Col. Thomas Lee's Regt. which did service at Castleton, Vt. 10 June 1781 (VT Rev. Rolls p381). DAR Lineage Book Vol 117 p 166: Alexander Gordon served as lieutenant on the Alarm list under Capt. Ebenezer Wood, Vermont line. He was one of the first settlers of Grand Isle, Vt. and settled on the very tip of the North end of Grand Isle where he established a ferry. The first tavern in Grand Isle was opened by him at the ferry in 1790. Alexander Gordon was first Justice of the Peace and Selectman in 1786. His name appears hundreds of times in the town records and his estate was unsettled for many years after his death. That he had a family is proven by the first U.S. census of 1790:
6 males inc. head of family, over 16 yrs.
0 males under 16 yrs
3 females inc. head of family, all ages
Part of this 1790 family may have been his brother Willard Gordon who came to Grand Isle in 1788 unm. Yet, in the second U.S. Federal census of 1800 Alexander Gordon is listed with the following household:
1 male 1-16 yrs
2 males 45 yrs and up
1 female under 16 yrs
1 female 16-26 yrs
1 female 16-45 yrs
His wife and family seem to disappear. No record of Mary (Hyde) Gordon's death or burial has been found. Children: Clarissa and a son. [ref 80:39]
