LIEUTENANT SAMUEL5 CLEMENTS (Samuel4, John3, Robert2, Robert1), born in Haverhill, Mass., 2 May 1730, died in Haverhill, 24 Dec. 1803, aged seventy-three years. He married in Haverhill, 13 Dec. 1750, Anna Gage, born in Bradford, Mass., 11 Mar. 1732-3, died, probably in Haverhill, before 1790, daughter of Ebenezer and Priscilla (Kimball) Gage. In early life Samuel Clements was a cooper, but later he became interested in shipping. In 1758, he was the master of the Isaac Chase of Haverhill; in 1761 of the Henry Maxfield; and in 1762 of the Henry Maxwell. These boats were used in the French War, probably for transporting troops or supplies. The year before, on the 18 Apr. 1757, he was a member of the First Company of Haverhill serving under Lieut. Benjamin Gale, Lieut. Col. John Osgood. From 1750 to 1754, there were three adult Samuel Clements in Haverhill; this Samuel5, his father, Samuel4, and his cousin, Samuel5, son of Nathaniel4 who was four years older than this Samuel. Hence, he was called "Samuel Clements, 3rd," since his father was "Samuel, Sr." and his cousin, "Samuel, Jr." [ref 88:164] It is evident from the records that this Samuel Clements had more than ordinary business abilities. He married some months before he was twenty-one. He joined in 1751 his older brothers, Timothy and Moses, and his nephew James, son of Timothy, in petitioning the Province of New Hampshire for lands at Sutton, N. H. In 1754, he inherited from his father, one-half the parental homestead. He also was an original grantee of "Township No. 6," in Hancock County, Maine. Children, born in Haverhill, Mass. 1751-70: Ruth, Anna, Ruth, Samuel, Ebenezer. [ref 88:165]

1754 The petition of Samuel Clements of Haverhill, is that you, gentlemen, would give or sell him the land on the banks of the Merrimac to low-water mark, bounding estates given. Moses Clement, northerly by the by the highway, easterly by the common, westerly by a line 3 rods to the east of Clements Bridge" (Haverhill record). [ref 88:165]

Samuel Clements served also in the Revolution, being Lieutenant in command of a band of Minute-Men, which responded to the Lexington and Concord call. "Samuel Clements of Haverhill, 1st Lieut., Capt. Daniel Hill's company, commanded by Lieut. Samuel Clements, Col. Johnson's regiment, which marched on the Alarm of April 19, 1775, to Cambridge; service six days" (MA Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolution, 3:621). [ref 88:165]

Samuel Clements of Haverhill, yeoman, owner and original grantee of a Proprietor's Share in Township No. 6, lying east of the Penobscot river, sells it to James Duncan of Haverhill, 25 May 1764 (Hancock co ME deeds 10:31). [ref 88:165]
