James, b. 23 May 1662; Esq., Oyster River, for many yrs. a leading citizen of Dover, leading man in Durham aft. it was set off and influential in the Prov. Captain of scouting companies in the Ind. Wars and in a Canadian exped., he rose in military rank to Lt. Col. Early a J.P., from 1717 was a judge of the Court of Common Pleas. Repeatedly moderator of Dover town meetings, he was the usual moderator in Durham; was select. in both towns, and was Assemblyman from Dover nearly 20 yrs. Will 18 Oct 1748, d. 8 Sep. 1749. He m. 1 Oct. 1688 Elizabeth Chesley who d. first. Ch.: James, Thomas, Samuel, Daniel, Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth, Ephraim. James and wife Eliz. adm. 1chh., Dover, Nov. 24, 1723. Will, of Durham, Oct. 18, 1748; Sept. 27, 1749; ment. five sons and four daus.: James, Samuel, Thomas, Daniel, Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth, Ephraim, Phebe.
