[ref 22] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - John Stockbridge, and Mary Godfry of Hampton, Nov. 23, 1681 [ref 51] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - John2 Stockbridge (John1) was born in Boston 19 July and baptized there 26 July 1657 and he died probably in Hampton, New Hampshire, before 23 November 1715. John married Mary3 Godfrey on 23 November 1681 in Haverhill, Massachusetts Bay. She was born in Hampton, New Hampshire (then part of Massachusetts) on 3 May 1661, the daughter of John2 (William1) and Mary (Cox) Godfrey and she evidently died before 1716, as she did not seem to receive a share of her husband's estate. By his father's will of 1657 John was to have the house in Scituate where Gilbert Broods was living. When his mother remarried, John went with her to Haverhill. There on 28 November 1677 he took an oath of allegiance. On 22 April 1681 he purchased five acres there from Nathaniel and Tamesin Ayer of Haverhill for 20 (Old Norfolk co records 63:328). Perhaps it was on this property that he built a cottage sometime after 27 February 1681/2. John Stockbridge, planter of Haverhill, for 90, deeded his dwelling house, gardens, and orchards in Scituate, with fifty acres of upland to his brother-in-law William Ticknor of Scituate on 2 November 1681 (Plymouth colony deeds 5:1:8,9). The Stockbridges moved to Hampton, New Hampshire, about 1683 where they settled on land that John's stepfather may have occupied earlier. John was of Hampton on 20 November 1683 when, for 15, he sold to his brother Charles Stockbridge of Scituate, millwright, his inheritance of land there which their father had willed to their sister Hester (Plymouth co deeds 5:2:247,248). John was taxed in Hampton in 1684. He purchased an acre there from Jonathan Wedgewood, blacksmith of Hampton, on 27 September 1693 for (Rockingham co deeds 9:346,347). John Stockbridge is described as a weaver of Hampton when, on 20 February 1693/4, he purchased for 5, two shares of commonages in Haverhill from his stepfather Daniel Hendrick. Three days later John sold these same shares for the same amount to Lt. Samuel and Mary Ayer of Haverhill (Essex co deeds 10:170). Accounts differ as to the date of John Stockbridge's death. He was certainly dead by 23 November 1715 when his eldest son Samuel Stockbridge, clothier, of Gloucester in Massachusetts Bay, renounced administration of his late father's estate, requesting that it be granted to the next eldest son, John Stockbridge of Berwick, Maine, which it was on 15 August 1716. John Fifield, town clerk of Kingston, New Hampshire, certified on 25 November 1715 that the late John Stockbridge of Hampton had 120 acres and one common right in Kingston. None of these records provides a clear date of death for John Stockbridge. Although the court records indicate that daughter Mary's statement [that he died 1716] may have been incorrect, it seems that those by Marston and James were also wrong about John dying before the birth of his son Abraham. John Stockbridge was impressed [drafted] with others at Hampton to serve as a "common sentinel" at Oyster River from 3 September to 18 September 1694. It is very doubtful that this person could have been John's ten-year-old son. Furthermore, a deed dated 12 June 1702, concerning some land in Exeter, was witnessed by a John Stockbridge, he making his mark (NH province deeds 7:73). It cannot be determined which John this was, since John2 signed his name on earlier deeds and John3 signed his name on later instruments. Perhaps John2 Stockbridge was the one mentioned by Chase who "went to sea and died of the small pox." Children: Ruth, Samuel, John, Moses, Charles, Mary, Abraham.
