Captain William Hackett, the immigrant ancestor, came from England, and settled in Salisbury, Massachsetts. He is supposed to have been that "Will Hackett" who received a grant of land at Dover in 1656, and was taxed at Cocheco, 1657-58. Subsequently he sold this land and removed to Exeter and later to Salisbury, where he owned land and lived until his death in 1713. He was a mariner and had the title of captain. In 1671 he commanded the sloop "Indeavour," of Salisbury. In May of that year he took a conspicuous part in the first recorded jury trial in New Jersey. At this time he was tried upon a charge of illegal trading, and conducted his own defense with great ability. He presented fourteen grounds for acquittal, and the jury "after a second and third going-forth" declared that "after a second and third going-forth" declared that "the matter committed to them is of too great weight for them," and were discharged. A second jury, however, promptly found him guilty and declared his sloop forfeited. He married, at Salisbury, January 31, 1667, Sarah, daughter of Thomas and Eleanor Barnard, born September 28, 1647-48, died September 10, 1717-18. He died March 6, 1712-13. Children: Sarah, John, Mary, Rebecca; born at Salisbury: Katharine, Ephraim, William, Judah, Ebenezer. [ref 29:501]

WILLIAM HACKETT, Capt., of Amesbury and Salisbury, "mariner;" m. [1st, (___); 2d?], Jan. 31, 1666-7[S], SARAH2 BARNARD. He recd. common right in A., 1667; signed petition in S., 1680. A Sarah Hacket signed Bradbury petition, 1692. He d. March 6, 1712-3[S]; will Dec. 4, 1712; April 6, 1713. Wid. Sarah d. Sep. 10, 1717[S]. In 1664, Wm. Hackett had a case in Nk. Co. court against Robert Jones. Capt. Wm. Hackett of S. commanded the sloop "Indeavour" of S. in 1671, was tried in New Jersey for not paying duty there, after having paid in New York, and his sloop was declared forfeited. (G. R., 1879, p. 10.) William Hackett and his son worked on a vessel built at Haverhill in 1678, for Nicholas Page of Boston. No son ment. in his will was old enough to receive wages in 1678, and John was then only 9 yrs. old, if living. This is one reason for supposing that Sarah Barnard may have been a second wife. Children: Sarah, John, Mary, Rebecca, Katharine, Epharaim, William, Judah, Ebenezer. [ref 36:190]
