EDWARD2 GOVE (John1?), of Salisbury and Hampton, m. ab. 1660, Hannah Titcomb* (Wm.), was of S. as early as 1657, when he bought right of commonage of Josiah Cobham; rem. to Hm. in 1665, then sold land in S. to Ezekiel Wathen (called "bro." of NEHEMIAH2 PARTRIDGE); d. May 29, 1691[D Hm]. Children, mostly from D Hm.: John, William, Hannah, Mary, Abiel, Penuel, Abigail, Ebenezer, Edward, Jeremiah, Rachel, Ann, Sarah. [ref 36:180]
*Hoyt corrects his error on page 752: EDWARD2 GOVE. If his wife was not HANNAH2 TITCOMB, may she not have been HANNAH2 PARTRIDGE? He seems to have been called "bro." of NEHEMIAH2 PARTRIDGE. He was deputy for Hm., 1679-80; lived in what is now Seabrook. He, his son, John,3 three Wadleighs, and others, eleven in all, were arrested and imprisoned for rebellion against Cranfield in 1682-3. He was convicted, sentenced to be hung, sent to England, and confined in the Tower of London, June, 1683; pardoned, Sept., 1685, and returned home.

Edward Gove was member of the First Colonial Assembly of New Hampshire, of which the first resolution in 1680 was, "No Act, imposition, law or Ordinance shall be valid, unless made by the Assembly and approved by the people." The Governor, the Honourable Mr. Cranfield, who was appointed by the King, dissolved this first Assembly and by his arbitrary action, so aroused the resentment of the people that an opposition party, which declared for "Liberty and Reform," was formed, headed by Edward Gove. Gove and his followers were arrested and brought to trial immediately; he was convicted of treason and, although his followers were set at liberty, he was sent to London and imprisoned in the Tower for three years. In the end, when Cranfield's government fell, he was pardoned and his estate restored. [ref 88:69]
