HARLAKENDEN, Gloucester, s. of Samuel the first, b. in Eng. a. 1628, brot. by his f. in 1637, freem. 1665, had w. Elizabeth call. in the will of 3 May 1670, made by Sarah, wid. of Richard Mather (wh. had been wid. of great John Cotton, and in Eng. by him m. as the wid. Story), her gr.ch. and may well be judg. the same in Cotton's will, 1652, nam. as his ch. Betty Day. We know, Cotton then had no gr. ch. and this ch. must have been b. of some d. of the wid. Story, wh. in Eng. or here had m. a Day. That name is found early both at Ipswich and Gloucester; but, tho. Mr. Felt has large acquaint. with the early inhab. of both those towns, he can discov. no f. for. this w. of Symonds. By her he had, at G. 1668: Sarah. But I kn. no more of him exc. that he went home and liv. at Wethersfield in Eng. 1672; nor is it kn. that he ever came back. Mr. Babson informs us, that the wid. ret. to G. where the d. m. a. 1692 Thomas Low; and her mo. d. 31 Jan. 1728, aged 90. [ref 20]

Harlakenden, gent., Wells 1656-1660, s/o Gov. Samuel Symonds. He bot the Boade est. with br. Wm. in 1655, and from Bush and Turbet in 1660. In 1656 Robert Clemons sued him for selling a mare and foal he had already sold to plf. Late of Wells 17 Apr. 1651 when he deeded large tracts to fa. and other relatives. Interested with fa. and br. at Lamprill River. Tpsw. 1662; Glouc. 1664 with w. Elizabeth Day (Wentworth); Ipsw. 1670, 1694. She d. in Glouc. 31 Jan. 1727-8 in 90th yr. His fa. willed to him the Lamprill Riv. farm and other N.H. land and to his dau. Sarah, the Coxhall land form. her fa.'s. [ref 22]

1655 Henry Boade sold farm to Harlakenden and his brother William with condition that he (Boade) continue living on the farm until he and his wife passed away. Under the terms of the deed the Boades would continue to keep up to 16 head of cattle, for which the Symonds would provide the hay. The deed also arranged for the transfer or joint proprietorship of the farm's "milch cows, oxen, swine, fruit trees, and workeing Towles." The cost of the farm would be "the some of four scoore pounds, to bee payd in wheate, ry, barley, Cattle, in butter, & porke, & Indean Corne."

Hugh Pike purchased 300 acres "being part of a tract of land which myself and divers others purchased of Mr. Harlakenden Symonds, of Ipswich, which tract of land is six miles in length and four in breadth, known by the name of Cock's Hall, in ye County of Yorkshire, in ye Province of Maine."

Harlackind[en] Symonds of Boston . . . in America Gent. for one horse . . . & the sum of three pounds to be paid in building & fenceing on the land of John Pollard of Belcham Paul in the County of Essex in old England (which lands is . . . in Duxbury . . . New Plimouth) when the same shall be Demanded by the sd Pollard or his heires & when the sd land shall be Devided from the other Moiety be these prsents sould By Samuel West of Duxbury aforesd Yoeman sold to said Samuel West one Moiety or half part of a Certaine Tract or percell of land . . . in Duxbury aforesd & is bound Eastward by the land of the sd West & Northward by the land of Edmond Western & Westward & Southward by the Comon which sd land was sometimes the land of Georg Pollard formerly of Duxbury aforesd Deceased & by his Brother & heire John Pollard the sd Moiety was given & granted to me the sd Symonds, which sd whole Tract Containeth by Estemation forty acres more or less

16 Sep 1692, Hudson Leverett, for his "conjugal love and affection to Elizabeth, his present wife, gave to David Adams, of Boston, blockmaker, and Abraham Adams, of the same, inn- holder, as trustees for her, a note of Harlakenden Symonds for �30 . . . "
