Ann, d. Esther, and serv. Thomas Whittier, call. Whittle in Geneal, Reg. V. 440, and XIV. 335, was freem. 6 Sept. 1639, by our Secr. spell. Roffe, as at the Southampton custom h. Mr. Somerby in Geneal. Reg. V. 440, assures us it was Roaf, correcting Mr. Steven's eyesight in II. 109, Mr. Drake says, Geneal. Reg. XIV. 335, it was Roaff, vindicating the honor of Mr. Somerby's vision; in ea. of the three cases, no doubt, foll. the sound, as it reach. the ear of the subordinate official, bec. one of the earliest propr. of Salisbury, there taxed 1650 and 2; perhaps had sec. w. Esther, wh. d. 3 June 1647; in July 1663, he was one of the proprs. of Nantucket, and d. 8 Feb. 1664. His d. Esther m. John Saunders. [ref 20] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - JOHN1 ROLFE [or RALFE], of Salisbury and Newbury, "husbandman," bro. of HENRY1, b. ab. 1588, came in the "Confidence," 1638, from "Melchitt Parke,"?? Wilts, via Southampton, with wife Ann, dau. Hester, and servant THOMAS1 WHITTIER [or Whittle]; free. Sep., 1639. He recd. land in S. in the "first division," 1639, '40, and '54; commoner and taxed 1650 and '52; signed S. petition of 1658, etc. His [second?] wife "Hester" d. June 3, 1647[S]. He d. Feb. 8, 1663-4[Nb]; will Feb. 4, March 29, 1663-4. His will, then of Newbury, after the 1st formal item, gives: 2d, House and land in Salis. to his dau. Hester Sanders, wife of John Sanders, and her chil. 3d, To Sarah Cottell, wife of Wm. Cottell, and her two chil., Sarah C. and Ann C., to be improved by Wm. Cottl for their benefit, "in addition to what I have given her before." 4th, To my grand chil. Isaac Ring and Joseph Ring, and to Elizabeth Shropshere and Esther Ring. 5th, To Thomas Whittier's five [or four?] children. 6th, To chh. at Nb. 7th, To "Richard Whittyer, my sister's son, and her son John Whittier." 8th, To John Roffe, my brother's son, and his two daus., "Marie and Rebeca Roffe." 9th, To Benj. Roff's son John Roffe and his son Benj. Roffe. 10th, To Ann Gardner, wife of Richard Gardner. 11th to 13th, Richard Dole's six children, [Mari Kinrick?], etc. "Kindsman Richard Dole" exec. Documents at Salem prove that when John Rolfe of Salis. and Nb. came to this country, he left a dau. in Eng., who was wife of Richard Ring of Marlborough, Wilts. Rolfe's will, 1663-4, 2d item, refers to his dau. Hester Sanders, wife of John Sanders and her chil.; 3d, to Sarah Cottell, wife of William Cottell and her two children, Sarah C. and Ann C. [the only ones then born], to be improved by Wm. Cottle for their benefit, "in addition to what I have given her before;" 4th, to four Ring grandchil. then liv. in Eng. The will of Robert Ring, 1688, gave property to "Will. Cottle, son to Sarah, now wife of John Hale of Nb., and Joanna, dau. to said Sarah." Children: Joane, Hester.
