On 8 June 1666, John Cooke ratified and confirmed, to Richard Wright and Thomas Mitchell upland and meadow "given by my father ffrancis Cooke unto the aforesaid Richard Wright and Thomas Mitchell" lying at Jones River in Duxbury "to be equally divided betwix" the two. On 1 Aug. 1672, Thomas Mitchell sold his share to Wright and in the deed states that it was given him by his grandfather Francis Cooke of Plymouth (Col deeds 3:234). He also had land at Dartmouth given him by his father but returned it in 1669 to his father, who the same day conveyed it to son Jacob. Thomas acknowledged the deed 1 Mar 1674. He apparently went to Block Island, R.I., where a Thomas Mitchell in 1678 was convicted of selling liquor to the Indians. He d. bef. May of 1687, leaving sons Thomas, John and Joseph, and perhaps daughters. [ref 87:741] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Thomas Mitchell, of Block Island, hatter, died prior to 6 May 1687, when in the inventory of John Williams of Newport, filed in the Suffolk MA Probate Court (10:341), are listed 20 sheep at Block Island, in the keeping of the executors of Thomas Mitchell, running on said island. (Suffolk probate 10:341). He may have come to the Island from New London, where a Thomas Mitchell was a shipbuilder. He first appears at a town meeting, 8 Jan. 1677/8. On 19 Apr. 1678 he was found guilty of selling liquor to the Indians. He sued Joseph Billington on a note dated 15, 9 mo. 1677, and entered the suit 5 Mar. 1678/9. This action was commenced on 28 Feb. 1678/9. On 9 Mar. 1679/80 he was found not guilty of causing the death of Ochokomah, an Indian. On 13 Oct. 1680 he was one of the townsmen signing an agreement with James Sands and John Williams. On 23 Feb. 1681/2 he was on a jury, and he was a freeman in 1684. He had considerable real estate on the Island. On 20 Oct. 1677 Capt. Thomas Terry acknowledged the sale of one-fourth of his one-sixteenth of the Island to Thomas Mitchell, and stated that he was to give a deed of the same (New Shoreham 1:463); and on 13 Jan. 1678/9 Thomas Terry, merchant, of New Shoreham, conveyed the same to Thomas Mitchell of New Shoreham, hatter (New Shoreham 1:463). On 8 Apr. 1679 John Williams leased to Thomas Mitchel of New Shoreham one-sixteenth of the Island, Mr. Bellingham's share (New Shoreham 1:97). On 1 Jan. 1679/80 Mitchell sold to Josias Helling of New Shoreham 22 acres on the West Side, part of the Thomas Terry's share, and received as part consideration 8 acres in Corn Neck (New Shoreham 1:229). On 6 Mar. 1683/4 Robert Guttridge gave a bill of sale of 1 acre near Henry Neale's pond to Thomas Mitchell of New Shoreham, hatter (New Shoreham 1:465).
