Capt. Thomas Mitchell, of New Shoreham, yeoman, born about 1660, died about 1740. He married prior to 1682, Margaret ___, possibly the daughter of John and Margaret Rathbone, who on 28 May 1716 witnessed, with her husband, the marriage of Job Card and Margery Tosh and on 9 Feb. 1727/8 deposed as to the marriage about 1717 of John Green and Mary Rathbone. In Apr. 1686 Thomas and John Mitchell appear in the New Shoreham Records (1:138). In 1688 his earmark was recorded. He was admitted a freeman of New Shoreham on 7 Apr. 1690. On 30 Sept. 1691 he signed a petition asking that soldiers be sent to the Island for its protection. On 12 Apr. 1692 he was elected constable of New Shoreham. On 10 Jan. 1692/3 he was on the list of freemen. He was one of those concerned in the building of the new harbor on 3 Sept. 1696, and he is found in the list of freemen that year. On 22 May 1697 he witnessed a bill of sale of a ship built and sold by Thomas Mitchell of New London to Joshua Raymond of New Shoreham. On 9 Apr. 1698 he was given a bounty for blackbirds' heads. On 10 Apr. 1705, he is styled "Sargent," and on 4 Jan. 1705/6 he held the office of townsman. He was on the list of freemen in 1708 and was townsman on 11 July 1710. On 29 feb. 1715/6 he, with his wife Margaret, mortgaged land to the Colony commissioners. On 28 May 1716 he witnessed the marriage of Job Card and Margery Tosh. On 3 Aug. 1717 he was on a coroner's jury. In 1725 he was deputy from New Shoreham to the General Assembly. On 11 Oct. 1726 he, styled "Justice Mitchell" and "Captain Mitchell," was moderator of a town meeting, and again on 10 Jan. 1726/7. On 19 Oct. 1736 he was deputy to the General Assembly (New Shoreham 2:258), and on 12 Apr. 1737 he was third townsman. His real estate transactions were numerous, especially towards the latter part of his life, and he divided his real estate among his sons. On 5 Dec. 1698 he bought 70 acres of Nathaniel Niles and on 12 Nov. 1714 he bought 124 acres of James Danielson (New Shoreham 1:460, 462). On 23 June 1718 he bought 80 acres at Block Island from James Sands of Oyster Bay, N.Y. (New Shoreham 2:19). On 8 Sept. 1723 he, with his wife Margaret, conveyed to his brother, Joseph Mitchell of New Shoreham, yeoman, 20 acres of land in the southeastern part of the Island, held by them in common, "which had belonged to their father" (New Shoreham 2:167). On 23 Sept. 1728 he styled "Captain Thomas Mitchell," conveyed to his son, "Thomas Mitchell of Boston cheesemonger," 232 acres of land at Block Island (New Shoreham 2:173). On 17 Feb. 1734/5 he and his wife Margaret conveyed 140 acres at New Shoreham to his son George Mitchell of that town (New Shoreham 2:245). On 14 June 1722 he, with Caleb Littlefield of New Shoreham, bought 500 acres in North Kingstown, now Exeter, R.I. (North Kingstown 5A:79), in Jan. or Feb. 1726/7 he conveyed land in North Kingstown to his son Joseph Mitchell of North Kingstown (5B:106), and on 1 Mar. 1735 he, with his wife Margaret, conveyed to his son, Benjamin Mitchell of Newport, hatter, land at North Kingstown (7B:211). On 19 July 1736 he, styled "Captain Thomas Mitchell," and his wife Margaret made an indenture with Thomas Mitchell, Jr., of New Shoreham, yeoman, for three parcels of land, one of 12 1/2 acres lying west of the highway, another of 5 acres at Clay Head, and another of 5 acres on the west side of the Island (New Shoreham 2:263). On 19 Apr. 1738 he made an indenture with Capt. Tiddeman Hall of Jamestown, R.I. (New Shoreham 3:15). His death probably took place shortly afterwards. Children: Thomas, George, Joseph, Margaret, Benjamin. It is quite probable that he had an earlier wife, who was the mother of the earlier children and that Margaret was mother of Benjamin and Margaret only. [ref 89:1-705]
