John Mitchell, of New Shoreham and probably later of Newport, R.I., born about 1664, died before 1708. He married after 1688 and prior to 6 Jan. 1692/3 Sarah ___, possibly daughter of John Rathbone and widow of Samuel george, or on 6 Jan. 1692/3 Sarah Mitchell witnessed a power of attorney from Peter and Mary George (parents of Samuel) to Joshua Raymond (New Shoreham 1:235), and on 19 Jan. 1693/4 she witnessed Peter George's will (New Shoreham 1:298). She is probably identical with the Sarah Mitchell of Newport, R.I., widow, whose will was proved 22 Apr. 1718, in which her son John and her daughter Mehitable are mentioned (Newport Town Council 3:157, 196). He first appears in New Shoreham Records in Apr. 1686 with his brother Thomas (New Shoreham 1:138). On 30 Sept. 1601[sic] he signed the petition for soldiers, and on 19 Jan. 1692/3 he was admitted a freeman of the town (New Shoreham1:202). In Nov. 1693 he was on a cornoer's jury, and on 10 July 1694 he was paid for a crow's head. On 4 May 1696 he was on the list of freemen. He was one of those concerned in building the new harbor on 3 Sept. 1696, and is again mentioned in Apr. 1697. On 3 Nov 1699 he, with his wife Sarah, sold the 8 acres conveyed to his father, Thomas Mitchell, by Josias Helling, as mentioned above (New Shoreham 1:375). On 7 Mar. 1700 he signed an agreement, together with other inhabitants of New Shoreham, regarding the minister's lot. On 10 Apr. 1705 he was present at a town meeting. On 17 aug. 1705 he witnessed the marriage of John Rodman and Margaret Gross (New Shoreham 1:388), and on 20 Mar. 1706/7 he witnessed a deed (New Shoreham 1:385). This is his last appearance on the Island, and it is most probable that he removed to Newport and died before 1708, when his widow, Sarah Mitchell of Newport, bought land there (Newport Court Files Mar 1742, case of Mitchel v. Hammet). Children: John, Mehitable. [ref 89:1-707]
