At his Majesties Court of General Sessions of the Peace . . . held at Plymouth . . . third Tuesday of December A.D. 1731 . . . Nathaniel Prett of Bridgewater in the County of Plymouth and Sarah his wife one of the daughters of John Hayward late of Bridgewater deceased, showing That the said deceased left Sarah Hayward his widow, and mother of said Sarah one of the complainents, and that for about twelve years last past they have wholly maintained her at their own cost and that for the space of about four years last she hath been bead-riden and is now about ninety years old during the whole time and now is incapable of maintaining her self, and that the Complainants have often requested Joshua Hayward and Susanna his wife of Bridgewater, Josiah Winslow and Sarah his wife of Boston, said Susanna and Sarah being the only children of John Hayward deceased, and one of the sons of said Widow, Joseph Alger and Mary his wife, William Ames, Thomas Conant and Martha his wife, Bethiah Ames and Hannah Ames all of Bridgewater, Jonathan Nelson of Mendos and Sarah his wife, which said Mary, William, Martha, Bethiah, Hannah and Sarah are the children of Mary Ames deceased one of the daughters of said Widow and are Grand-children of said Widow; Joseph Hayward, Thomas Hayward and Benoni Hayward all of Bridgewater and sons of said Widow; and Thomas Hayward of said Bridgewater and Susanna his wife one of the daughters of said Widow; Edmund Rawson of Uxbridge and Elizabeth his wife daughter of said Widow, and John Rawson of Mendhem who married with "Mercy" now deceased one of the daughters of said Widow in the behalf of said two children had by said "Mary" and are now minors, to do their proportionable part towards the maintenance of said Widow, but they utterly refused so to do. Wherefore the Complaintents pray that all the afore named Persons may be sumoned to appear before this Court at the next Sessions to show cause if any they have, why they do not do their proportion towards the said Widows maintainance for time past as well as time to come, and to be proceeded against as the law directs in such cases. Whereupon said Court ordered that the several Persons complained against be summoned to appear at the next term to show cause if any they have, why they neglect to do their proportionable part toward the maintenance of said Sarah Hayward as set forth in the Petition (Book of Sessions 2:34:37).
