Capt. Thomas Mitchell, Jr., of New Shoreham and of Boston, Mass., born about 1682, died 29 Mar. 1741, aged 59. He married in Boston, 11 Apr. 1726, Rev. Thomas Foxcroft officiating, Margaret ___, widow of Capt. John Peck of Boston. Capt. Thomas Mitchell, Jr., first appears in the New Shoreham records on 20 Nov. 1712, when as Thomas Mitchell, Jr., he witnessed a deed (New Shoreham 1:451). He was admitted a freeman of New Shoreham, with his brother George, on 12 Apr. 1715. On 21 Feb. 1722/3 Thomas Mitchell, Jr., witnessed a deed at New Shoreham (New Shoreham 2:55). He moved son afterwards to Boston, where he was married on 11 Apr. 1726. In 1726 he was carrying on the business of a retailer (an innkeeper) on Cornhill, Boston, this having been his wife's business. On 23 Sept. 1728 he is described as "of Boston cheesemonger," in the deed whereby his father conveyed to him 232 acres at New Shoreham, but in a lease made by him to his father of these lands the next day (24 Sept. 1728) he is called "late of Boston." He was certainly in Boston for several years more, as in 1729 his license as retailer there was refused, and his child Elizabeth was baptized in the Brattle Street Church in 1731. He returned soon afterwards to New Shoreham, as on 19 July 1736 an indenture was made by Capt. Thomas Mitchell of New Shoreham, yeoman, and his wife Margaret, with Thomas Mitchell, Jr., of New Shoreham for certain lands that subsequently appear in his will (New Shoreham 2:263). On 19 Oct. 1736 Thomas Mitchell, Jr., was appointed to audit the town's account with John Pocock and Samuel Dunn (New Shoreham 2:262). On 29 Sept. 1737 his father, Thomas Mitchell, Sr., of New Shoreham, sold to him land in North Kingstown (North Kingstown 8B:208). Thomas Mitchell, Jr., made his will on 16 Feb. 1740/1, and it was proved 4 July 1741 (New Shoreham 3:59). He describes himself as Thomas Mitchell of New Shoreham, yeoman. He leaves 150 acres in Kingstown bought of his brother, Benjamin Mitchell, and certain land on Block Island bought of his father, Thomas Mitchell (i.e., the land described in the indenture of 19 July 1736) to pay his debts. The rest of his estate went to his wife Margaret, the executrix, and to his two daughters, Margaret and Elizabeth. This will was witnessed by Thomas Mitchell, Jr. (i.e., the son of Joseph Mitchell, his uncle). His gravestone in the Common Burying Ground at New Shoreham describes him as "Captain Thomas Mitchell Jr" and states that he died on 29 Mar. 1841/2), aged 59 years. Children 1728-31: Margaret, Elizabeth, Elizabeth. [ref 89:1-708]
