Notes for George MITCHELL
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - George Mitchell, of New Shoreham, was born about 1685. He married, 27 Feb. 1711/12 Sarah daughter of Nathaniel Mott of New Shoreham. He was admitted a freeman at New Shoreham, with his brother Thomas, on 12 Apr. 1715. On 18 Apr. 1717 Thomas Paine of New Shoreham deposed that George Mitchell, together with Daniel Tosh and Dr. James Sweet, had been seized and impressed by the pirate Palsgrave Williams; and Governor Cranston wrote to Governor Shute of Massachusetts, asking him to show mercy to these three men if they should fall into his hands. On 17 Feb 1734/5 Thomas and Margaret Mitchell of New Shoreham conveyed to their son George Mitchell of the same, 140 acres there (New Shoreham 2:245). On 15 Sept. 1737 George Mitchell of New Shoreham and hs wife Sarah sold land in that town to William Rock of the same, trader (New Shoreham 3:5). This is his last appearance in the New Shoreham records, and he probably moved away with his family soon afterwards, perhaps to Long Island, Westchester County, N.Y., or southwestern Connecticut, whither a number went about this time from the Island. Children 1712-20: John, Rebecca, Mordecai. Nathaniel, George, Samuel. [ref 89:1-710] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
