JOHN, Plymouth, call. junr. s. of Francis, came with his f. in the Mayflower, was old eno. to be tax. in 1634 as high as either his f. or John senr. m. 28 Mar. 1634, Sarah, d. of Richard Warren, had four ch. liv. in 1650, says Bradford, perhaps Esther, Mercy, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth; at least one must have been m. and had more than one ch. to justify the extr. boast for old Francis to the letter, that in 1600 he "hath seen his children's childr. have childr." Jane, the sis. of John, had done her part for the blessing, I presume. But in this branch the exult. phrase of Bradford fails of truth. He was deac. but disagreed with Reyner; rem. and was min. of Dartmouth 1676, of wh. he was one of the first purch. and rep. 1673; and was liv. 1694, the oldest surv. perhaps, of the male passeng. in the Mayflower; and d. 23 Nov. 1695. John Cooke, eldest son of Francis Cooke, the "Mayflower" passenger, of sufficient age in 1634 to be taxed equally with his father; was a volunteer for the Pequod war, 7 June, 1637, "if provision could be made for his family." It was in this year that Mrs. Warren, in consideration of a marriage solemnized between her daughter Sarah and John Cooke the younger, of Rockey Nook, conveyed to the said John land at Eel River, which he shortly after, 11 November, 1637, exchanged with his brother-in-law, Richard Bartlett. He was a member of the Plymouth military company, August, 1643, and a representative from Plymouth in the General Court of the colony, 1638-9, 1641-4, 1647, 1653-6. Plymouth Church had made him one of its deacons, but disagreeing with the pastor, Reverend John Reyner, upon theological issues, and with others of the colony, upon the persecution of the Quakers, he removed to Dartmouth, of which he was one of the first purchasers; selectman 1670, 1672-3, 1675, 1679-82, 1686. John Cooke was one of the partners in the building of the first vessel of the colony - "the forty ton leviathian of the deep, the pride and delight of Plymouth" - and was appointed to build a ferry between Dartmouth and Rhode Island. About the time of his settlement in Dartmouth he became an adherent of the religious principles implanted by Roger Williams and Obadiah Holmes, and was for many years a minister of the Baptist denomination. He died at Dartmouth, 23 November, 1695, the last male survivor of the passengers on the "Mayflower," and lies buried at Oxford, the upper village of the town, with no monument to mark his resting place. His will, executed 9 November, 1694, is recorded in Bristol County Registry of Probate, I, 139. Children: Sarah, Elizabeth, Esther, Mercy, Mary. [ref 87:3-621]

John Cooke was baptized at Leiden between January and March 1607/08 and was, thus, about thirteen years old on arrival at Plymouth with his father Francis Cooke in 1620 on the Mayflower. He became a deacon of the Plymouth Church in the 1630s, but he was excommunicated from the church ca. 1657. He served on juries and on various special assignments, and was a long-time Plymouth deputy. Probably around the time he was excommunicated, he became a Baptist. In 1664 he was granted fifteen acres of land near Dartmouth and he had other significant land dealings in the area. In 1666 he was a deputy for Dartmouth. He was one of the advisers for the defense of Dartmouth against the Indians. He became a magistrate for Dartmouth authorized to marry, to administer oaths, and to issue warrants for court trials at Plymouth. Though Nathaniel Morton called him "a shallow man," he appeared to be a populist-type leader who was also able to command the respect of the authorities. He married Sarah Warren, daughter of Mayflower passenger Richard Warren 28* March 1634, and they had five children. Cooke died 28 November 1695, having lived through the entire life of Plymouth Colony. He was frequently mentioned in Plymouth records as John Cooke, Jr., which was to distinguish him from John Cooke, Sr., who was apparently no relation. [ref 90:271]
