[Letter from Francis to his parents, 8 days before he died; followed by a letter from a company officer]

June 10th Fair Oaks

Dear Father it is with pleasure that I now take my pen in hand to write you a few lines. I am well and hope that you are to. I haven't got any letter from you since I left Cleveland. I am sitting in the breast works. I have been in two or three battles. There has been six killed in our Company John Hornett John Shong. I tell you father . . . hury. The rebel P Shooters being on us all the time. Now father you wouldn't be afraid about me. I am trying to be a good boy. I hope God will spare my life so I can get home. Father I want you to send me a sheet of paper every time you write to me. Father if I never come home I want you to give Levi my mare colt and Winfield my black colt. Write how the Ohops are up north. Tell William I heard that he is getting married. William I want you to come down and see me if I ever get in camp. I will pay your fare if you come you can get a pass. Trust I have seen Sights. I have seen shells strike men in the head and blow their brains out. I want you to write where Samuel is and how he is getting along. We are expecting a big fight here before long. When I was in battle I remembered your last words you said to me remember Geo. Washington put your trust in God. Mother if we dont meet here on earth we will meet in heaven. Tell the children to be good and mind you. Tell Levi never never to think of going to war for I have seen Fathers killed. John Hornett was through the heart John Shong was killed by a shell. Remember your Soldier Son

James Hutchinson Esq.

Dear Sir would to god circumstances which prompt me to write you had never occured. Sad indeed is to see bloom of youth in the opening of manhood Just at the moment- when life is most desirable the young man patriot- and soldier suddenly snatched from the storm of battle to the tranquil peace of heaven certainly the home of the Union Soldier. Francis M your son and one of which you may justly be proud, was killed night before last- while charging the Rebels works on the hill which we now occupy. God saw proper to remove him in an instant, and thus avoid the suffering which some endure. He was killed by cannon shot and the ball passed through from side to side. CG Shelly who is also wounded has his effects - and as he is in the hospital I do not know how his effects may be. Among all the noble boys who volunteered in this terrible campaign none can say I have a brighter record than FM Hutchinson. Always strong, healthy and willing. He did his whole duty- all that was aske'd of him, and that is all the soldier can do. He has gone but the enemies of our country can safely testify that he did not die in vain. I empathize deeply sympathize with you all in your bereavement. Francis had been in battle since the sixth of May with the exception of about 10 days. every day Yours Truly,

Lieut. JV Halsey
Comdg 10 Co ov SS
