The spring following their marriage in 1814, William Hutchison and his wife started for Ohio in a keel boat, coming down the Youghiougheny and the Monongahela to the Ohio, down the Ohio to the mouth of the Muskingum, up the Muskingum, the Tuscorawas and Walhonding to the mouth of Killbuck Creek and up Killbuck Creek to the mouth of Salt Creek in Holmes County. They were among the pioneers of Holmes Co., the first settlement in that part of the state having been made in 1809 by Jonathan Grant, who came from Beaver County, PA and settled near Killbuck Creek. Since that time several families had settled in the county, the majority of them coming from Pennsylvania. Two or three families accompanied William Hutchison and his wife, and settled with them in what was afterwards Salt Creek Township, Holmes County. They had a hard life of it for some years. Timber was very heavy, and wild animals plenty. There were some Indians, of the Delaware tribe, living in the county at that time, although they were friendly. But a few years before, however, the settlers had feared an outbreak, and had erected a blockhouse near Holmesville, although the Indians apparently did not become troublesome, since the house was used but a short time.

William Hutchison and his wife settled on a farm which is now two miles south of Fredericksburg, which they cleared, and where all their children were born.

On the organization of the County, the Associate Judges of the Court of Common Pleas were Peter Casey, William Hutchison, and George Luke. They met at Millersburg, Feb 18, 1825, and organized the court. They issued a proclamation for an election to be held on April 4th, at which county officers were selected. Among these, Daniel Hutchison, a brother of William's, was elected sheriff. At the June term of the court, the Judges divided the county into townships. William Hutchison also stood high in the militia service.

Both William Hutchison and his wife were devotedly pious. They belonged to what was formerly known as the Salt Creek congregation of the Associate Presbyterian (or Seceder) denomination. After the union of this denomination and the Associate Reformed in 1858, the congregation was called Fredericksburg congregation of U.P. Church. William H. was for thirty or forty years an elder in the church and probably the most active and influential of any man in the session.

On the 1st of April, 1841, they moved from the farm to the village of Fredericksburg, where they continued to reside until their deaths. Ann Milligan Hutchison died first, Sept 15, 1861, very sudden, of what is called sporadic cholera. William Hutchison died Aug. 12, 1867. The house in which they both died, and which was built by William Hutchison, stands on the corner of Main St. and Water St. It was a large, two story frame building. Both are buried in the village cemetery just east of the town. [source: "The Hutchison Family" by Rev. Joseph Hutchison]
