He was the father of David Rittenhouse, the great American astronomer. He was born at his family's paper mill near Germantown. In his will he names his wife, Elizabeth, and children, David, Benjamin, Eleanor Evans, Mary Morgan, Margaret Morgan and Esther Barton.
