ABRAHAM2 CLEMENTS (Robert1), born in England, probably at Ansley, Warwickshire, about 1622, died at Killenacratt, Co. Cavan, Ireland, 5 Apr. 1677. He married, first, Elizabeth (___), who died at Coventry, England, and was buried at Holy Trinity Church, Coventry, 14 Oct. 1656. He married secondly, Jane, widow of Richard Aylett, Esq., of Killenacratt, Co. Cavan, Ireland. She was licensed to marry, 19 June 1678, Walter Burton of Ballinagauron, Co. Cavan. When father Robert Clements of Ansley, with his sons, Job, John, and Robert, emigrated to New England in 1642, he left in England, probably at Coventry, two sons, Abraham and Daniel, then about twenty, and eighteen years old, respectively; and a little daughter, Mary, who afterwards joined her father about ten years later. Abraham Clements began his career as a soldier in the Army of the Commonwealth. He was employed for twenty-one days by the Commissioners for Sequestration for the County of Warwick and the City of Coventry, in assisting their agents in viewing and inventorying several estates belonging to Papists. Abraham Clements was living in Coventry in 1652, and from that time until 1659, his name appears continuously in the city records. In 1652, he had a house in Welstreet, Bishopstreet Ward, which, according to the Rate Book for that year was taxed nine shillings on an annual rental value of six pounds, a considerable rent in those days. In the same book, Mr. Clements is taxed five shillings and three pence for a close, the annual rental of which was three pounds and ten shillings. This close was in West Orchard Street, Croscreeping Ward. Daniel Clements had been in Ireland since 1646, when he went over with his regiment during the Irish Rebellion of 1641. About 1657, he had come into possession of his Rathkenny estate in County Cavan. Abraham and Daniel Clements were the only members of Robert Clements's family now remaining in the mother country, but in 1658, John Clements returned from New England, with the intention, evidently, of settling in either England or Ireland, for when the father, Robert, died in Haverhill, Massachusetts, in that same year, he left certain rents due him in England to these three sons, John, Abraham, and Daniel. John, with his entire family was lost at sea sometime before July 1659. Abraham and his second wife, Jane, had grants of land in Ireland which were confirmed to them by Charles II in 1667. In 1671, Abraham Clements was made a Justice of the Peace for the County of Cavan; in 1676, he served the office of High Sheriff. He died intestate, 5 Apr. 1677, at Killenacratt, Co. Cavan, Ireland, and the administration of his estate was granted to "Joseph Pratt of Garradice, County Meath, Esq., lawful husband of Lydia Clements, otherwise Pratt, natural and lawful daughter of said Abraham Clements, for the use of Jane Clements, widow, and Lydia Pratt, aforesaid." On the 21 Apr. 1677, a commission was directed to Thomas Hampson, Daniel Clements, and Benjamin Pratt, Gentlemen, for the valuation of the estate. The funeral entry of Abraham Clements, in Ulster's Office, Dublin Castle, reads as follows: "Abraham Clement, son of (___) Clement died April 5th, 1677 at Killnacrate, Co. Cavan, and was buried the 7th of the same month in the Country. He married to an daut. of (___), by whom he had one daut., Lydia, who married Joseph Pratt of Garradice by whom she had Joseph, Benjamin, John & Lydia." The certificate is surmounted by a sketch of the family arms, but without crest or motto. Children: Lydia, a daughter. [ref 88:866]
