| - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - JONATHAN,3 b. ___[Hv]* [ref 36:97] *error - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jonathan Clement, s. Robert, jr. and Elizabeth (Fane), after* 1673 [ref 51] *possible error - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - JONATHAN3 CLEMENTS (Robert2, Robert1), born probably in England, about spring 1659, died in Durham, Conn., between 5 Mar. 1711-12 and 4 Apr. 1712. He married before 1694, Elizabeth (___), who died after 1712. Since Robert Clements very carefully recorded every child but Jonathan, and as there is no record of a child born between, 14 July 1657, and, 2 Oct. 1660, during which time Robert was in England with his family, there is little doubt that Jonathan Clements was born while they were across the ocean in England or Ireland. As a rule the children in Robert's family came less than two years apart. Before 1692, Robert Clements had deeded to his son Jonathan, an acre of the land he bought of Hugh Sherratt and, in 1690, he gave him the land in New Jersey that he had probably acquired for his son Daniel, who died there in 1679-80. Jonathan Clements removed to New Jersey shortly after deeding land to his brothers settling in Elizabethtown (now Elizabeth), where he was one of Mr. Harriman's parishioners from 1694-1705. At one time he gave ten shillings in support of the minister. There is an entry against him in the old ledger, "May 26, 1705, Mr. Clements, your negro came to board." He probably moved to Durham, Conn., shortly after 1705. There is a peculiar error in Jonathan Clements's Will. It is evident that the scribe who wrote the Will, mistook the name of Jonathan's brother Fawne, for "Vaughn" and so spells it in the document, and it is so spelt in all the court proceedings. Jonathan was ill when he made the Will and probably did not notice the error. It seems probable that since Elizabeth chose the New Jersey property that her relatives were there. If Jonathan ever had children they did not survive him. [ref 88:73] Robert Clements, Sr., of Haverhill, Mass., cooper, conveys to his son Jonathan Clements, ninety-three acres of land at Woodbridge, East Jersey, which he bought, 5 Apr. 1679, from Nathan Webster and Mary, his wife, then of Bradford, Mass., but formerly of Woodbridge, 26 Sept. 1690 (East Jersey Deeds, D). [ref 88:74] Jonathan Clements of Haverhill, cooper, conveys, to brothers, Abraham and Fane Clements, land that his father had given him in Haverhill, 15 Aug. 1693 (Essex Co., Deeds, 10:46). [ref 88:74] Jonathan Clement of Elizabethtown and wife Elizabeth, convey to Obadiah Aires of Woodbridge, a houselot of twelve acres in Woodbridge, on Kent's Brook; also, sixty acres near Longstaffs Farm or Plain; also, six acres of meadow, together with freehold right of commonage, 13 Aug. 1694 (East Jersey Deeds, D: 67). [ref 88:74] David Robinson of Durham, Conn., sells, to Jonathan Clement, seven and one-half acres of land there, 20 Dec. 1709 and John Stanley sold him six acres, 7 Feb. 1709-10 (Durham, Conn., Deeds, 1:117). [ref 88:74] William Seward sells Jonathan Clements, seven and one-half acres, 15 Sept. 1710 (Durham, Conn., Deeds 2:9). [ref 88:75] James and Samuel Norton sell Jonathan Clements, seven and one-half acres in Durham, 2 Oct 1710 (Durham, Conn., Deeds 2:11). [ref 88:75] John Sutliff sells to Jonathan Clements, sixty acres of land with buildings, etc., 22 Oct. 1711 (Durham, Conn., Deeds 2:43). [ref 88:75] The deeds of Durham also show that Jonathan Clement devised by will to "Vaun" Clements, his brother, thirty acres of land with buildings on 18 June 1712 (Durham, Conn., Deeds 1:31 a).
