| Notes for Joseph PRATT | ||||||||
| - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Joseph Pratt of Garadice, Co. Meath, Ireland, died in Cabragh, Co. Cavan, between 10 Dec. 1705 and 9 Jan. 1706, son of John and Helena (Aston) Pratt of Northamptonshire, Eng. He married secondly, Frances Cooch, daughter and heiress of Col. Thomas Cooch of Cabragh. He married thirdly (marriage licence dated, 15 July 1686), Elizabeth (Mervyn) Poole, daughter of Sir Audley Mervyn and widow of Nathaniel Poole, who survived him. Joseph Pratt and his two brothers, Benjamin and John, migrated from Leicestershire in the middle of the seventeenth century. Joseph and Benjamin came to Ireland while John went to Jamaica. They may have been sons of John Pratt of Lutterworth who had an assignment of Adventurers' land in Co. Meath in Feb. 1653-4. Joseph Pratt became of Garadice, Co. Meath, being High Sheriff of Meath in 1698. At the time of his father-in-law's death in 1677, he had had, by his wife Lydia, four children, Joseph, Benjamin, John, and Lydia, and between that date and 1680, when Lydia died, he had two more children. By his second wife, he apparently had no issue, and by his third wife, he had one son, Mervyn, to whom he gave Cabragh, the estate he had inherited through his second wife. In his will (made after the death of his son Joseph, and Cottersleach, who died about 1656, aged about fifty-eight years, married Helena, daughter of Robert Aston of Leicestershire and had eleven children. Joseph and Benjamin, the fourth and fifth sons of John and Helena (Aston) Pratt, were "of Ireland" in 1683. It is stated that Joseph married a daughter of Abraham Clements of Coventry and had several children. From pedigree entered at Leicester by Thomas Pratt, elder brother of Joseph and Benjamin Pratt, 3 Aug. 1683, who, if the children were named in the order of their birth in the funeral notice of Abraham Clements, was his eldest son), Joseph Pratt, Sr., called Benjamin, his eldest son and makes him his heir, setting aside his grandson, Thomas, the son of his first-born son Joseph, who by the law of primogeniture would be the heir. He also orders that the estate shall go successively, if his sons die without heirs, to his other sons in the order of their births, and then to the heir at law. It seems probable that for some reason, Joseph Pratt, Sen., was displeased with his son Joseph and so excluded his children from direct inheritance of the family estates. Will of "Joseph Pratt of Cabrah, Co. Cavan, Esq." To eldest son, Dr. Benjamin Pratt, the lands of Kilnacratt in Co. Cavan and other lands in said county, including a moiety of the lands of Ballytogher, "the other half belonging to Testrs brother Benjamin Pratt," also to son Benjamin, lands in Co. Meath. In event of son Benjamin dying without heirs male, lands to go to testator's second son, John Pratt; in like event, to third son Thomas Pratt; in like event, to fourth son Mervyn Pratt, and in default of heirs male, then to next heir at law. Legacies to Captain John Pratt; to daughter Margaret Pratt; to son Thomas Pratt; to children of Dr. Joseph Pratt, "late deceased," i. e., Araminta and Thomas; to son Mervyn Pratt; and to wife Elizabeth, over and above her marriage portion. Executor, Dr. Benjamin Pratt. Dated, 10 Dec. 1705. Witnesses: John Preston, Lydia Preston, Thomas Murray. Administration granted to executor, 9 Jan. 1705 (Prerogative Wills, Dublin). Children, born in Garadice Co., Meath, Ireland 1664-87: Joseph, Benjamin, John, Lydia, Margaret, Thomas, Mervyn*.
