City 8 Aug 1903 on the SS Philadelphia
The SS Philadelphia was owned by the American Line. It was on this ship
that Marconi achieved substantiated wireless communication with Poldhu
during a voyage begun on 22 February 1902, thus proving that wireless
communication could be effected across the Atlantic Ocean. Using syntonic
receiving apparatus and a conventional coherer, messages were recorded on
Morse inker tape and attested by the ship's captain. The ship had been
equipped by Kemp with a four part aerial on three bamboo crosses - one at
the main mast, one at the mizzen and the third near the instrument room. |
