CollateralLines

Index of Collateral Lines

These are lines that directly or indirectly connect to a Paxson;
this is NOT a complete and exhaustive list of all those who married a Paxson.
compiled by MJP Grundy

This is the list of 268 collateral lines I've identified so far that I would have liked to include some day on this web site. Obviously this isn't going to happen.

If as of January 1, 2024, this page disappears or becomes frozen or available only through the way-back machine or archive pages, it probably will be because ancestry.com couldn't figure out how to monetize them, and has now abandoned the last of the old freepages of rootsweb (that it took over some years earlier). Those of us who've been around a while remember before ancestry.com became such an empire that there were several sites run by volunteers, posting important and helpful primary sources. Meanwhile if you want to use ancestry.com may I suggest that you check out your local public library? Libraries often have access to a free version.

Only 79 of these have been posted. They tend to be single lines rather than complete genealogies of entire families. Only the surnames highlighted in blue and underlined are available so far. Click on one to see that family's page. Many are still under construction, a lot never got the chance to be started. The intention was to eventually include for each family, biographies only of the individuals listed below plus information on at least some of their children. These are not intended to be all-inclusive surname pages. Holding with the general philosophy of this web site that historical setting is important, social, religious, economic, and family context is included where I've been able to research and include it. The setting, stories, and context of five clusters of families have been published in hardcover books, and a sixth is being researched.

The arrow symbol [ -> ] indicates that the next named person is a child of the previous individual or couple. So, for example, "Alderman, Thomas -> Elizabeth Alderman" indicates that Thomas Alderman had a daughter named Elizabeth Alderman.

You can jump down to find collateral line surnames beginning with A,   B,   C,   D,   E,   F  G,   H,   I and J,   K,   L,   M,   N, O, and P,   Q and R,   S,   T,   V and W,   and Y. There are no surnames beginning with U, X, or Z that I have found so far connected to my families.

If you want to trace the connection from any line below to a Paxson, take the last surname in a given line (who will be the husband of the final woman in that line), and scroll to that surname; look at the last surname in that line and go to it, until eventually you reach a Paxson. For example, the last surname in the Anderson line is David Dunning. Scroll down to Dunning, and see that the last Dunning listed is a woman who married a Paxson.

Some of the families with their collateral lines that have been worked on in more depth are marked with a floral symbol in the right margin. So, for example, the flower of a nicotiana (tobacco) plant symbolizes all those families that connect, eventually and often indirectly, with the Holliday family. This group I call the Southern Connection; many of them were colonial tobacco planters in Maryland. A book with this title has been written about these families. Common vetch is the symbol for families that interconnect with the Price family. There is a book, The Price Family in History Among Welsh and English Quakers in Chester County, Penna. that embeds the lives of these families in a larger historical context. A third book describes The Richardsons of Four Lanes' End in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Its symbol here is Yarrow. A fourth book looks at the material culture in a Philadelphia house at 1328 North Fifteenth Street: the Dunning Family and its Things. On this webpage a Daylily, dandelion, and daffodil are used for Balderston, Dunning, and Stevenson families, respectively. My thanks to Anne E. G. Nydam for graciously permitting me to use these block prints, and also for the leek 'Leek', pen and ink drawing by Anne E. G. Nydam, used by permission, which is her pen and ink drawing, rather than a block print, used for the Griffith family and its collateral lines. A fifth book leaps back to the medieval period where history, myth, and genealogy intermingle, where Warlords and Kings offer an account of (some) of our Anglo Saxon, Irish, Viking, and Welsh ancestors.

Because the entries in this increasingly large web site are in narrative style there is no easy way to index them, so please try using your browser. However, I have constructed an index for the first eight generations of the Paxson line in North America (at least for those whose names I have). The Paxson genealogy in what was first the American colonies and then the United States is arranged by generation, and within each generation, in birth order of the first generation, etc. See the first, second, or third gneration in the colonies, or the Fourth,   Fifth,   Sixth,   Seventh or   Eighth Generation of the Paxson family in the U.S. of A. The more recent generations are far from complete. The Eighth Generation drops the genealogical birth order and instead is in straight alphabetical order. A small data base of more recent generations is being kept off-line. If you have corrections or additions to any of the material presented here, preferably with documentation, please write to me at .
