11 Feb 1900 With the arrival of the Albatross at Chatham all the contract vessels allotted to the dockyard for completion dating the current financial year have now been delivered. The Albatross is the first of a new type of 30 knot torpedo boat destroyer, and has been built by Thornycroft of Chiswick. Her engines develop 8,000 hp and she is fitted with four water-tube boilers. She has triple screws, and her speed is to be 32 knots, so that only one vessel in the Navy, the 38 ? knot destroyer Express, will exceed her in speed. Her builders hope that when the official trials take place she will show more than her contract mileage.
