1 Apr 1900 Captain Cherry appointed to commission the Argonaut 19 Apr.

29 May 1900 Passed Beachy Head bound west.

27 Jun 1900 A Sheerness telegram states that HMS Argonaut has completed preparations for her departure for China, excepting her steam trials, and is expected to leave England early in July.

27 Jun 1900 HMS Argonaut left the Downs today for Sheerness.

28 Jun 1900 A new crew has been detailed to recommission the gunboat Esk on the China Station, and they will take passage to Hong Kong in the cruiser Argonaut, which is about to leave for China ; the old crew returning in the Undaunted, whose place the Argonaut is taking on that station.

1 Jul 1900 Sheerness. Whilst preparing for service on the China station the ship has received her orders to take her departure for Hong Kong without carrying out the commissioned trials previously ordered. She will consequently coal and sail without delay. Upwards of a 1,000 tons of coal will be supplied her from the Medway coal hulks. The steam trials carried out this week were all successful,

24 June 1900 Khedive Arrives in the Osborne from the Continent. Steamed to Sheerness and received a 21 gun salute from the Sanspareil, at Garrison Point Fort, followed by similar salutes from the cruisers Argonaut and Galatea.
