25 May 1886 Sheerness, 22 May, New Ironclad. An important addition will shortly be made to the Royal Navy by the delivery from the contractors of the new ironclad Benbow, 12 guns, 10,000 tons, 7,500 horse power, which has been built for the government by the Thames Ironwork Company, Blackwall. The Benbow is a double-screw armour-plated barbette ship of the Admiral class, and will carry two 110-ton guns - the heaviest ordnance ever mounted on a British man-of-war - together with ten 5 in/ long range breechloading guns and a strong equipment of Whitehead torpedoes and Gardner and Nordenfeldt machine guns. The Benbow will test her machinery on the measured mile off Sheerness, and will afterwards proceed to Chatham to be completed for commission
