Circa Oct 1856 commissioned as tender to the Calcutta, Flag Ship on the East Indies station. She only had a draught of about 2 feet which enabled her to go places that would not have been possible in the Calcutta.

Oct 1856 Hong Kong departed up the river to Canton, taking possession of the Barrier Forts en route.

5 Nov 1856 attack, with ship's boats, on 25 mandarin junks and the capture of the French-folly Fort.

12 Nov 1856 bombardment and capture of the Bogue Forts and the Anunghoy Forts on the following day. Some days later towed a boat from the Calcutta down-stream to destroy 35 Mandarin junks, whilst on the stocks.

4 Dec 1856 further attack on and capture of the now repaired French-folly Fort.

4 Jan 1857 with ship's boats came to the aid of one of the Calcutta's boats, involved in more than a "brush" with a fleet of Chinese junks.

8 Jan 1857 British forces commenced withdrawal from off Canton, to Hong Kong.
