13 Jun 1801 launching of the Dreadnought. At about twelve o'clock this fine ship, which has been thirteen years upon the stocks, was launched from the Dock-yard with all the naval splendour that could possibly be given to aid the grandeur and interest of the spectacle. She was decorated with an Ensign. Jack, Union, and the Imperial Standard, and had the marine band playing the distinguished martial pieces of "God Save the King, Rule Eritanrtra," &c. &c. A prodigious concourse of persons, to the amount, as is supposed, of at least 10,000, assembled, and were highly delighted by the magnificence of the ship and the beautiful manner in which she entered the watery element. But what afforded great satisfaction was, that, in the passage of this immense fabric from the stocks, not a single accident happened She was christened by Commissioner Sir Charles Saxton, who, as usual, broke a bottle of wine over her stem. Her complement of guns is to be 98, and has the following significant emblem at her head, viz. a lion couchant on a scroll, containing the Imperial arms as emblazoned on the Standard. This is remarkably well timed and adapted to her as being the first man of war launched since the Union of the Union of the British Isles ; it most expressively indicates that all they possess worthy of protection is to be guarded by that courage which has ever been the bulwark of our laws, religion, commerce, and navigation. So great and active were the exertions of the officers and artificers of the dock-yard, that by half past one, she was brought into dock for coppering. &c. where great numbers went on board to view her internal construction, which is said to equal, if not surpass, that of any ship of the same size. She is remarkably spacious in all her apartments, and appears to be formed of such sound material and with such solid workmanship as promise the most lasting and essential services.
On the following day (Sunday), she was completely coppered in six hours. On Monday morning she went out of dock. There was perhaps never known an instance of more strenuous and effective exertions on any such occasion, as were, in this instance, made by Mr. Peake, the builder, and the artificers employed under him for the purpose of getting her ready and out of dock for rigging and fitting.

7 Jul 1801 the Montague departed Plymouth Sound for Spithead, to be repaired, with new raised-men for the Dreadnought, fitting for sea there.
9 Aug 1801 went out of Portsmouth harbour to Spithead, Capt Vashon.
19 Aug 1801 departed Spithead as a part of a squadron under the command of Vice-Admiral Pole for a cruise off Cadiz, including the St George, Dreadnought, Zealous, Ramillies, Vanguard, and Powerful.
21 Aug 1801 last evening hove in sight off Plymouth Sound, at 8 P.M. the Dreadnought, with 5 sail of the line, and lay to till dark.
21 Aug 1801 last evening stood in off Plymouth Sound the Zealous, hoisted a Dutch ensign, reversed, and fired three guns to leeward, as a signal for the Goliath to join the squadron from Cawsand Bay ; she immediately warped out to the bite of the bay, and this morning at day-break, the whole squadron made sail to the westward, with a fine wind at E.S.E. blowing fresh.
31 Aug 1801 arrived off Cadiz, to join Sir James Saumarez's squadron, Adm Pole in the St George, with the Dreadnought, Ramilies, Vanguard, Powerful and Zealous.
2 Sep 1801 the St George, Dreadnought, Ramilies, Vanguard, Powerful and Zealous, in company with Sir James Saumarez's squadron, consisting of the Defence, Warrior, Spencer, Superb, Audacious, ships of the line ; and Caroline, Thames, frigates ; and sloop Peterell, began cruising before Cadiz. The Bellona was reported to be at Gibraltar fishing her main-mast.
15 Jan 1802 was reported to be off Gibraltar.
circa 27 Feb 1802 the Penelope, departed Gibraltar for England, leaving the following vessels at Gibraltar : the Caesar, Sir J Saumarez ; the Dreadnought, Capt Vashon ; Superb, Capt Keats ; Triumph, Capt Barlow ; Phoenix, Capt Halsted ; and Leda, Capt Hope.
10 May 1802 was at Gibraltar when the Isis arrived there with HRH Duke of Kent from Falmouth.
16 May 1802 was due to depart Gibraltar with the Dragon and Acasto for Malta to bring back troops.
2 Jul 1802 arrived Spithead the Dreadnought, 98, Captain Vashon, from Minorca.
5 Jul 1802 came into Portsmouth harbour to be paid off.
15 Jul 1802 paid off and laid up in ordinary.
13 Mar 1803 Capt Bowen has been apptd to the Dreadnought.
14 Mar 1803 Dreadnought commissioned.
17 Mar 1803 is reported to be making every exertion in order to get the ship to sea.
30 Mar 1803 Dreadnought went out of harbour to Spithead.
14 Apr 1803 arrived Cawsand Bay at sunset, from the Spithead.
5 May 1803 arrived Torbay, off Brixham Quay, to join the Squadron, consisting of the Culloden, Neptune, Ardent, Albion, Courageux, Venerable, and Thunderer, building up there.
10 May 1803 Hon Adm Cornwallis arrives on board the Dreadnought, at Torbay, from the Acasta, and hoists his flag as Flag Officer of the Channel Squadron.
16 May 1803 whilst the next item, for the 17th, gives one version of what happened, the newspapers (yes I know, don't believe a word) but in my humble opinion I feel that they have been building up a slightly different, and I feel more accurate story of how the vessels prepared to depart for the French Coast over the last few weeks ie : Adm Cornwallis sailed on Monday from Torbay, with a squadron consisting of the following ships : Dreadnought, 98, Hon Adm Cornwallis, First Capt Murray, Second Capt Brace ; Neptune, 98, Capt Drury ; Albion, 74, Capt Ferrier ; Minotaur, 74, Capt Louis ; Ardent, 64, Capt Winthorp ; Culloden, 74, R.-Adm Campbell, Capt Lane ; Venerable, 74, Capt Searle ; Sceptre, 74, Capt Dickson ; Thunderer, 74, Capt Bedford ; and Russel, 74, Capt Williams. The Tonant, Malta, Spartiate, Plantagenet, Mars and Conqueror, lying in Cawsand Bay are nearly ready for sea, and want but few men to complete their complement.
17 May 1803 following the recommencement of hostilities departed from Cawsand Bay, Plymouth, with a fleet to cruise off Ushant.
9 Jul 1803 Admiral Cornwallis, off Ushant, transferred his flag from Dreadnought to the Ville-de-Paris.
14 Jul 1803 arrived Cawsand Bay from the Fleet.
17 Aug 1803 the Dreadnought arrived Cawsand Bay, from the Channel Fleet, to refit, however in another source the Dreadnought arrived Plymouth 21 Aug.

19 Nov 1803 departed from off Brest and confirmed, when she arrived at Plymouth, that the squadron hadn't been blown off the shore during the recent gales, as had been surmised in England.
6 Dec 1803 departed Plymouth for the Channel Fleet.
31 Jan 1804 the Ville de Paris, Adm Cornwallis, has been obliged by the gales now blowing up the Channel to leave the French Coast and put into Torbay with the Dreadnought, Prince, Foudroyant, Impetueux, Colossus, and Conqueror, from whence they sailed on the 3 Feb.

Circa 21 Jul 1804 it is reported at Portsmouth that the Dreadnought, *Malta (sic), Colossus, Goliath, and Prince, are arrived at Plymouth, and that the Warrior and *Malta (sic), have sailed to join the Channel Fleet.
Circa 18 Aug 1804 Capt G Reynolds apptd to the Dreadnought, flag ship of Adm Collingwood.
3 Nov 1804 Capt Irwin is apptd to the Dreadnought.
18 Jul 1805 between Cape St.-Vincent and Gibraltar fell in with Nelson's fleet on its return from the West Indies.
20 Aug 1805 Dreadnought, Colossus and Achille, chased from off Cadiz by the Franco-Spanish fleet. 21st joined by the Mars, and was back on station once the joint fleet was in harbour.
10 Oct 1805 off Cadiz - the tactical preparations etc. for the forthcoming battle. 20 Oct combined fleet departed Cadiz, fleet manoeuvres.

7 Sep 1810 on the west side of Ushant, the ships' boats recaptured the Spanish merchant ship Maria-Antonia.
Plymouth circa 12 Sep 1810 arrived with the Antonio Maria, Capt. Aspilga, from Teneriffe, which had been taken by a French privateer, and had been cut out from near Ushant.

Jan 1832 following the death of Lieutenant David McCrery, the situation of Superintendent of the Seaman's Hospital Ship Dreadnought has become vacant.
River Thames, London 1 Aug 1835 the disabled and invalid seamen of many nations observed the passing of the King and Queen, en route to pay a visit to Greenwich Hospital.
