The 1st mate of the Veterano, Francisco Labandeyra was previously before the court as acting master of the Emprendedor, condemned at Sierra Leone in 1839, and was chief mate of the Boa Uniao, also condemned there in 1841 which perhaps illustrates the detailed nature of the index that the Court maintained at Sierra Leone, and the fact that the British officials on the Mixed Court at Havana warned the sister Court at Sierra Leone that whilst the Veterano was officially discharged from Havana, for Monte Video, she was, in fact, understood, from local intelligence received by the Court, to be headed for the West Coast of Africa.

23 Sep 1844 is reported to have been transferred from the Brazilian to the West African station. An attempt by the ship's pinnace, at Gallinas, on the African coast, to capture a felucca, probably the Huracan, Jaime Guardiola, master, but the vessel proved too well prepared, and killed 2 men and wounding 3 as they attempted to board : the Huracan was eventually detained on the 24 Feb 1845 at Popoe by the Hydra, Commander Young - see p. 364 at www.archive.org/details/royalnavyhistory06clow

25 Sep 1844, at anchor, off Gallinas Bay, as noted in the covering letter from the Commanding Officer, Commander Jones, of the Growler, for Lt. Henry S. Georges, in command of the prize crew taking the Concepcion to Sierra Leone, to pass to the Commissioners of the British and Spanish Mixed Court of Justice, at Sierra Leone, and a copy to be sent to Commodore Jones, i/c of the West Coast of Africa station, detailing the capture of the Concepcion.

24 Jan 1845 off Gallinas with the Larne, Eclair, and Sealark, when the Penelope arrived from Sierra Leone with provisions and stores, the Sealark being dispatched to her station off New Cestos.

4 Feb 1845, following the ill-treatment of black British subjects by the Chiefs in the various lands surrounding Sierra Leone and not having received any positive response 286 officers and men in 18 boats, from the Penelope, Larne and Growler entered the River Gallinas, and proceeded to the now empty slave barracoons at Dombocorro, which were levelled to the ground, and the materials removed were burnt. At the same time Schaffa Rogers avoided any attempt to confront him, and his properties was reduced to ashes : musket fire from nearby was silenced by the marines and the canonades from the boats. The Rogers' family properties were similarly reduced, and when returning to their ships some musket fire from the nearby mangrove swamps caused no problems and the officers and men returned on board with out any injuries.
