Portsmouth 27 Jun 1835 was launched here yesterday. It is reported that she is to be coppered here before being sent round to the River to have her engines fitted.

Portsmouth 15 Aug 1835 departed today to Woolwich to have her engines fitted.

Portsmouth 12 Sep 1835 has been commissioned at Woolwich.

Portsmouth 5 Mar 1836 touched at Spithead, on Wednesday, on her way to Woolwich, and landed invalids from the Mediterranean squadron, for Haslar Hospital.

Portsmouth 21 May 1836 towed the Vanguard out of harbour to Spithead on Wednesday.

Malta 17 Aug 1837 Hermes departed for Alexandria with the mail, and with the Ariadne in company. The Ariadne is to be used as a coal depot at Alexandria.

29 Apr 1839 Malta, departed for Marseilles with despatches brought from Alexandria by the Blazer, arriving there on 14 May.

19 May 1839 Malta, arrived from Marseilles, and will sail for Greece and the Ionian Islands following the arrival of the Volcano from Gibraltar.

19 May 1839 Malta, Prince George of Cambridge has embarked for Corfu in the Hermes.

12 Oct 1839 Malta, the Hydra, which left this port on the 2d, with the despatches and London mail brought by the Hermes from Gibraltar, had arrived Beshika Bay 6 inst.

4 Nov 1839 Malta, arrived on the 4th from Alexandria, with the Indian mail, which was despatched from Bombay on the 7th ult. for Suez in the Zenobia.

6 Jan 1840 Malta, departed Thursday for Gibraltar with the mails for England.

4 Mar 1840 Malta is expected to sail shortly with mail from London for Gibraltar.

14 Mar 1840 Mate William Rattrey, appointed from the Castor to the Hermes;

2 Oct 1840 is to be paid off at Chatham on Monday next.

26 Nov 1842 has been lengthened at Chatham and has been sent to Woolwich to have her engines and boilers fitted.

5 Apr � 20 Dec 1852, ship's company involved in 2nd Burma War, and annexation of Pegu (now known as Bago, Myanmar), for which they were due prize money for capture of booty.

End of Apr 1853, after the capture of Nankin by the Ti-ping rebels H.M. Plenipotentiary, in order to ascertain the nature etc. of the rebels, arrived at Nankin in the Hermes and had communications with the rebel leaders, and arranged that Great Britain should preserve a neutral attitude with regard to China's internal commotions - see p. 386 at www.archive.org/details/royalnavyhistory06clow

28 Aug 1854 It is reported in Sydney, NSW, that Capt Fishbourne, has arrived at Spithead from Hong Kong in 106 days. She has been 4� years in commission, and in that time has been stationed at the Cape, East Indies and China. The ship will require a thorough repair. She has brought home from Hong Kong the left wind of Capt P. McLean's company of the 8th battalion of Royal Artillery.

24 Jun 1857 departed the Cape of Good Hope.

5 Jul 1857 arrived Port Natal and landed Sappers, and received 28 tons of coal.

7 Jul 1857 departed D'Urban, (Durban).

8 Jul 1857 arrived at Delagoa Bay.

11 Jul 1857 arrived at Cape Correntes and Inhamban, information received at Natal suggesting that slave vessel may be operating in the region, and boarded one vessel.

14 Jul 1857 arrived off the Quillimane River, but there being too much surf proceeded to Angexa, details of the visit appearing in a separate letter.

19 Jul 1857 departed Angexa.

20 Jul 1857 arrived Mozambique and reports that the SE Monsoon has set in strong. 21 Jul paid a visit to the Governor-General with Mr. McLeod and the consulate was opened on 24 Jul. The Governor General stated that he was attempting to combat the slave trade, but that he only had limited resources.

28 Jul 1857 departed Mozambique, but due to the monsoon was unable to make the intended ports on the NW part of Madagascar, so departed for Joanna, arriving on the 31st.

2 Aug 1857 having watered and taken on board some bullocks, departed Joanna.

6 Aug 1857 off Ibo, and writes to the Admiralty that 6 supposed French merchant vessels, probably Spanish, were waiting to embark "emigrants," read slaves, but were waiting for the French Brig of war G�nie, which would hopefully send them about their business.
