1833 schooner.

20 Feb 1833 commissioned at Chatham by Lt. Edward Barnett for survey duties with the Thunder in the West Indies.

Plymouth 22 Apr 1833 arrived from the eastward.

Plymouth 24 Apr 1833 departed for the West Indies.

1 Jan 1834 On the North America and West Indies Station.

8 Mar 1835 departed from Port Royal, Jamaica.

10 Mar 1835 anchored at the South Cay of the Serrana in the morning to determine the longitude by observation. This being done, Lieut. Barnett shaped his course in the afternoon for the island of Old Providence, for the same purpose.

11 Mar 1835 in the following morning, the Jackdaw struck on the reef which extends from the north extremity of Old Providence. Such was the violence of the surf, an unusual swell having prevailed the day before, with a strong wind, that all hopes of getting the vessel off the reef were at once abandoned, the masts were cut away, the water started, guns thrown overboard, and the weather anchor let go, to lighten her, and a raft was constructed, by means of which the boats were removed clear of the surf, and safely moored. Being a new vessel, she resisted the violence of the surf long enough to permit a larger raft to be built to preserve the provisions, and astronomical instruments ; which being done, they proceeded with in a sloop which had gone to his assistance, and landed on the island. In summary was lost on the reef at the north end of Old Providence whilst employed on survey duties ; officers and crew saved.

12 Mar 1835 HMS Gannet arrived, and conveyed Lieut. Barnett and his crew to Jamaica.

Jamaica 28 Apr 1835 crew reported to be at Port Royal, having been brought here on the 6th by the Gannet.

Portsmouth 8 Aug 1835 Atholl arrived from Quebec (9 Jul), with the crew of the Jackdaw for Court Martial for the loss of their vessel.

17 Aug 1835 the officers and ratings of the Jackdaw were Court Martialled on board the Victory at Portsmouth for the loss of the Jackdaw, and whilst the Admiralty charts were shown not to reflect the full distance covered by the reef, Lieut. Barnett was admonished for carrying too much sail at night, and in hazy weather, and being close to his destination, the rest of the officers and men being acquitted.
