8 Feb 1812. An officer of the Laurel writes from Plymouth Dock that we had been employed for 5 weeks blockading four ships of the line in L'Orient. We were then ordered to Quiberon where we arrived on the evening of the 30th, where the fleet was employed watering us, as we had been selected as one of three frigates ordered to pursue 3 French frigates which had escaped from the Loire. In company with the Rota and Rhis, made passage through the Taigneuse ; blowing hard and hazy weather ; the Rota lost the marks and escaped the rocks, unlike the Laurel which struck the Govivas rock, and despite pumping the water gained fast. Nearby French batteries opened fire ; 3 boats with officers and men were sent ashore to request a truce, but were taken prisoner. We were eventually saved by our own boats and those from the ships in company.
