16 Aug 1796 captured a French privateer, name unknown, off Beachy Head.

Copy of a Letter from Admiral Peyton, Commander in Chief of His Majesty's Ships aud Vessels in the Downs, to Mr. Nepean, dated 19 August 1796.
Sir, Have received a Letter from the Master of HM hired Armed Cutter Lion, dated the 17th Instant, which acquaints me that on the 16th, Beachy Head bearing E.N.E. Four Leagues, Signal being made of an Enemy at the Signal-Post, the Lion, together with the Swallow Revenue Cutter, chased a Lugger and a Sloop, re-captured the Sloop, and took the Lugger ; found her to be a French Privateer, with Swivels and Small Arms, and 17 Men, Three Days from St. Valory's, and had not taken any thing but the above Sloop. I am, &c. Jos. Peyton.

12 Sep 1796 captured the French privateer Thurot near Beachy Head.

Copy of a Letter from Admiral Peyton, Commander-in-Chief of HM Ships in the Downs, to Evan Nepean, Esq, dated September 14, 1796.
By a Letter I have this Day received from Mr. Nick. Simmonds, Master of the Lion armed Cutter, he acquaints me, that at Six o'Clock on the Morning of the 12th Instant, Beachy Head bearing N. by W. Distance about Three Leagues, he descried a French Cutter Privateer within him, and immediately gave Chace; the Privateer finding that Lion was determined to keep without him, at Seven o'Clock, bore down, and, after exchanging several Shot, struck to the Lion, and proved to be the Turot, Four Days from Havre de Grace, commanded by Bernard Emanuel Turat, having Four Four-Pounders and Six Swivels, a Number of Small Arms, and Twenty five Men. She had taken nothing during the Cruize.

14 Dec 1796 captured the French privateer Hazard near Spithead.

3 Feb 1797 captured the French privateer Requin off Dungeness.

4 Mar 1797 Prize money due on the French Privateer La Turo, captured 12 Sep 1796, will be paid out in the Downs.

13 Nov 1798 captured the French privateer Succ�s off ????ings.

1 Jan 1799 CO : S Bevill ; stationed : Downs and North Sea (N.C.).

Circa Feb 1800 Lieutenant Tatham, late First of the Director, is appointed to the command of the Lion cutter.

8 Nov 1800 Jersey, the Pelican, 18, was driven from her anchors on shore on the rocks, and lay bilged in St. Alban's bay, Jersey, but was got off and repaired, as was the Lion, 14. The officers and crews' with difficulty saved their lives.

11 Sep 1801 23 Dec 1805 prize money from the capture of the Ship Apparencen is now due to be paid at the Horn Tavern, Doctors Commons.
