Gun boats

Notes:

NB Few, if any, gun boats appear to be mentioned singly, and so I've set up this web page with a view to detailing any mentions of gun boat activity. I would guess that those serving in gun boats will presumably be on the books of the Captain / Admiral Superintendent or Guard Ships of the relevant yards, the gun boats being treated as tenders for Pay &c.

3 May 1801 orders came down to Plymouth this day for the whole flotilla of gun-boats at this port under Captain Hawker, to be got ready for sea with all possible dispatch, and to proceed to Jersey. Though the orders were only issued at nine a.m. so great was the exertions of Captain Hawker and the Officers of the gun-boats, that six sail were reported ready for sea at three p.m. and the rest will be got ready by to-morrow noon.

5 May 1801 departed Plymouth Sound the first division of the gun-boat flotilla for Jersey.

30 May 1801 orders received Plymouth to stop the gun-boats not departed for Jersey till further orders.

25 Oct 1801 the gun boat flotilla at Plymouth, under command of Captain Hawker, are ordered here from the different creeks to be paid off.

22 Aug 1803 orders have come down to Plymouth for 8 gun boats to be got ready for service in the Channel Isles, with the prospects of invasion becoming a reality. In addition, it was understood that similar arrangements had been made for Portsmouth and Chatham to provide a similar force, all of which were expected to sail later in the week.
