From a newspaper dated early 1886:
Serious Outrage on board HMS Pelican

Letters have reached Plymouth from the Pacific station containing particulars of a serious state of things existing on board the Pelican sloop, Commander Richard W. Hope, which was commissioned at Devonport in April 1884, and is now at Vancouver's Island.

The relations between the officers and men are of such a character that already no less than forty of the crew have deserted from the ship, and it is expected that others will follow.

A short time since, whilst the master-at-arms was discharging his duties below, a large shot weighing about thirty pounds was deliberately thrown down upon him from the lower deck. The shot struck him with such force that he was dangerously wounded. The surgeon of the ship ordered his immediate removal to the hospital, where he will be confined for some time, and it is feared that he will have to be invalided home. Although the Pelican has been only two years on the Pacific station, she will shortly be relieved.
