Retribution (late Retaliation, late Hermione), 1800

15 Jul 1800 Plymouth, this morning presented a fine gratifying sight by the appearance off the Sound of another homeward-bound Jamaica fleet, of 84 sail, richly laden, valued at near a million and a half, convoyed by the Brunswick, 74, and the Retaliation, 36 [late Hermione, recaptured from the Spanish.]. Renamed again as Retribution, on her return to England.
24 Sep 1800 Plymouth, by letters from Jamaica it is reported that Captain Foster, was promoted to the command of the Retribution, 44, late Hermione.
Twixt 11 Nov 1800 and 8 Dec when the packet Lady Hobart was at Jamaica she observed the arrival of the Retribution, Capt Foster.
30 Mar 1801 the Sans Pareil, 80 ; Carnatic, Thunderer, 74s ; York, 64 ; Abergavenny, 54 ; Apollo, Nereide, 36s ; Retribution, 32, Capt Forster ; Bonetta, 18 ; Merlin, Albicore, 16s ; were at Port Royal, Jamaica, when the Falmouth packet Lady Francis arrived from Martinique.
19 Apr 1801 R.-Adm. Calder completed the squadron with provisions, &c. Prepared to sail, but the wind being unfavourable the squadron had one day's respite, being the first since they left England. Received here four days of fresh beef and some vegetables. Sailed the packet for England, with the Retribution frigate, formerly Hermione, to convey her through the Windward Passage. Also sailed four homeward bound merchant ships under convoy of the armed merchant ship Thetis.
16 Oct 1801 the Falmouth packet, Princess Elizabeth, Capt Kidd, called at Jamaica, where he found HM Ships Cumberland, Abergavenny, Topaze, Circe, Cerberus, Retribution, Volage, Shark, Calypso, and Merlin, and during her stay the Carnatic, Seine, and Crescent arrived, and Capt Kidd departed Jamaica 2 Nov., with HM ship Apollo in company.
3 Nov 1801 the Falmouth packet Leicester, Steel, arrived Port Royal, Jamaica, where the Santa Margarita, Crescent, Carnatic, Retribution, Topaze, Mosquito/Musquito, and Abergavenny were present. During the Leicester's stay at Port Royal the HM ships Bourdelais, Snake, Echo, Ambuscade, Tisiphone, Calypso, Juno, Sans Pareil, Melampus, Pelican, Captain, Goliah/Goliath, Brunswick, and Elephant arrived there.
20 Jan 1802 arrived Spithead the Retribution frigate (late Hermione), Capt Forster, from Jamaica, having parted company in the Chops of the Channel with the Volage, 24, Capt Vesey. She brought home Lieutenant-General Lord Balcarres, late Lieutenant-Governor of Jamaica, Colonel M'Alurdock, and Lieutenant-Colonel Tremenheere (of the marine forces), Governor of Curacoa.
16 Feb 1802 departed Spithead for the eastward, to be paid off.
22 Feb 1802 arrived in the Downs, and departed for Sheerness.
Circa 24 Sep 1803 the Unite, 40 ; Modeste, 38 ; Heroine, 32 ; Solebay, 32 ; Daedalus, 32 ; Quebec, 32 ; Iris, 32 ; Retribution, 32 ; Vestal, 28 ; Resource, 28, are to be jury rigged and to depart shortly for Long Reach, to take in their guns and power ; after which they'll drop down to the Lower Hope, to be moored across the River for the protection of the Thames. The manning of these vessels will be the responsibility of the Trinity Board.
