1860 Portsmouth, Building: originally designed and begun as a wooden line-of-battle ship of 91 guns, 3716 tons (old measurement), and 800 H.P. nom., but converted in accordance with an Admiralty Order of June 5, 1861, to an armour-plated ship of 6720 tons' displacement, and 3434 H.P.I. As adapted, she was a full-rigged broadside ship, with iron armour of a maximum thickness of 6 inches.(WLC) Building on this vessel as a wooden ship commenced 1 Dec 1859 and conversion into an iron cased vessel on 22 Jun 1861.

1870 Flag Ship, North America and West Indies

13 Dec 1870 at Bermuda.

17 Jan 1873 arrived Barbadoes from Bermuda.

28 Feb 1873 arrived at Holland Bay, Port Royal, Jamaica, accompanied by the Sirius, Plover and Fly.

10 Mar 1873 departed Port Royal, Jamaica, for Havannah.

26 Mar 1873 reported to be at Bermuda.

3 Jan 1874 arrived at Spithead, Portsmouth, from North America and flying the flag for Admiral E. G. Fanshawe : was shortly expected to go into Portsmouth Harbour to be paid-off about 15 Jan 1874.
