Portsmouth 19 Sep 1829 Is to be commissioned for the Coast Blockade in the Downs, in place of the Ramilies, which requires repairs.

Jul 1830 the Downs.

12 January 1831 near the Marine-parade, Dover, Lieutenant Thomas Ross and a Joseph Jacobs, both of HM ship Talavera, were assaulted by smugglers, and the Lieutenant was violently beaten and bruised. A reward of �50 has been offered, which will lead to the conviction of the offenders.

26 Jan 1831 The coast blockade is to be abolished and the ships manning the stations at the Downs and at Newhaven are to be paid off.

20 May 1831 A squadron of Guard-ships, consisting of the Caledonia, 120, Prince Regent, 120, Asia, 84, Donegal, 78, Gloucester, 74, Alfred, 50, and Talavera, 74, are directed to assemble at Spithead. They are placed under the orders of Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Codrington, G.C.B., who will hoist his flag on board the Caledonia, and Rear-Admiral W. Parker, whose flag will be on board the Prince Regent. It is understood they will proceed to the Western islands, and employ the principal part of the summer in cruising between those islands and Gibraltar, as well as the mouth of the Channel. It is expected they will put to sea in the course of the present month.

14 Jun 1831 departed Deal for Portsmouth.

15 Jun 1831 arrived Portsmouth from the Downs, to form part of the squadron under the command of Sir E. Codrington, Capt. Colby, in command.

23 Jun 1831 at Spithead.

7 Jul 1831 departed Spithead, with the fleet under Sir E. Codrington.

27 Aug 1831 arrived St. Helens from the Downs, with the fleet under Sir E. Codrington and anchored at six o'clock on the evening of the 28th, and moved up to Spithead the next day.

29 Aug 1831 departed Portsmouth for Plymouth.

3 Sep 1831 Talavera and Wellesley arrived Plymouth from the Downs.

7 Sep 1831 arrived Portsmouth from Plymouth.

11 Sep 1831 departed Portsmouth with the squadron under the command of V.-Adm Sir E Codrington.

25 Sep 1831 arrived Cork with the squadron under the command of Sir Edward Codrington, and departed for Plymouth and Portsmouth 15th Oct.

17 Oct arrived Plymouth Caledonia, Britannia, Wellesley, Talavera, and Viper, from Cork, departed on the 21st for Spithead.

22 Oct 1831 arrived Spithead.

27 Oct 1831 arrived Deal from Spithead.

29 Oct 1831 the squadron under the command of R.-Adm Warren, consisting of the Talavera, Revenge, and Wellesley, of 74 guns each, Stag, 46, Galatea, 42, Tribune, 42, Curacoa, 24, Tweed, 20, Imogene, 28, Magicienne, 24, Pantaloon, Brisk, Onyx, Recruit, and Charybdis gun-brigs, and Viper schooner, weighed anchor from the Downs on the for the Scheldt, but, on approaching the Dutch coast, the squadron met with a severe gale and thick weather, when the Admiral ordered them to disperse and make the best of their way back to the Downs. The squadron was formed as a result of the war between Holland and the newly formed nation of Belgium

1-2 Nov 1831 the Stag, Galatea, Tribune, Curacoa, Imogene, Tweed, and Brisk, arrived in the Downs, the Talavera, Revenge, and Wellesley, with the rest of the squadron shortly after.

10 Nov 1831 Downs.

22 Dec 1831 departed the Downs for Sheerness.

19 Mar 1832 arrived Deal from Sheerness.

22 Mar 1832 arrived Spithead from the Eastward.

24 May 1832 along with the Britannia embarked 200 men from the Royal Marine Artillery of the Portsmouth Division, under Captain Clements, RM., to take down to Plymouth to transfer to the troop ship Romney for service with the squadron heading for Portugal where the Miguelites have been seizing British merchant shipping at sea, and British property ashore etc., and Lord William Russell, now embarked on board the Britannia, has been sent, it is said, to demand immediate restitution of the stolen property, backed up by an appropriate force.

24-25 May 1832 having dropped down from Spithead to St. Helens once Lord Russell was on board the squadron was held up by fog eventually departing for Plymouth and Lisbon on the 25th.

29 May 1832 having transhipped the R.M.A. embarked at Portsmouth, across to the Romney at Plymouth, along with their field pieces, returned to Spithead.

14 Jun 1832 departed Spithead for the downs, to await orders.

27 Jun 1832 departed the Downs for Sheerness to take on board Lord Durham, for passage to St. Petersburgh, regarding Russia's interference in Polish affairs.

12 Aug 1832 arrived at Deal, from the Baltic, and departed the following day for Plymouth.

16 Aug 1832 arrived Plymouth from St. Petersburgh.

23 Aug 1832 departed Plymouth for Lisbon - a part of a squadron supporting British Trade in Portugal which was being damaged by the war between Dom Pedro and Dom Miguel. See p. 270 at www.archive.org/details/royalnavyhistory06clow.

29 Sep 1832 in a letter dated Oporto 29th, the Talavera was reported to have arrived Oporto several days previously from the squadron lying on and off the Tagus.

29 Oct 1832 arrived Portsmouth from Lisbon.

4 Nov 1832 the combined British and French squadron, made up of the Donegal, Talavera, Satellite, Snake and Rover (British) ; and Suffren (flag), Melpomene, Med�e, L'Ariane, and Cr�ole (French), due to depart Spithead for the Downs. The Spartiate, Conway and Volage will join the squadron when ready.

15 Nov 1832 anchored in the evening in the Downs with the following British vessels : Donegal, 78 ; Talavera, 74 ; Stag, frigate ; Larne and Scout corvettes ; Rhadamanthus and Dee, steam vessels.

16 Nov 1832 anchored at Deal, and then weighed and departed to the eastward.

18 Nov 1832 in collision with French frigate Calypso in Queen's Channel, off Deal.

19 Nov 1832 has departed Deal for Sheerness to make good necessary repairs.

20 Nov 1832 arrived Sheerness to carry out repairs.

1 Dec 1832 supposed to have been taken out of dock today following repairs to the cut-water, head rails, bolsters of the hawse, and other parts connected with the bow, but one wonders if the repairs may not have taken much long to put right properly, when one reads that the Calypso's repairs are estimated to cost �10,000 ?

14 Dec 1832 arrived in the Downs from Sheerness.

6 Mar 1833 arrived Downs from Sheerness.

13 Mar 1833 departed Deal for the North Sea on a cruise.

17 Feb 1835 Salamander arrived Portsmouth from Plymouth with Royal Marines from the Talavera.

12 Feb 1835 paid off at Plymouth into ordinary.

2 Jan 1836 it is rumoured that she is to be prepared for sea service.

19 Mar 1836 is understood at Portsmouth to have been commissioned at Plymouth.

30 Apr 1836 was removed out to Plymouth Sound on Thursday.

11 Jun 1836 the Talavera is in the Sound at Plymouth waiting for a suitable wind for Lisbon, where it is reported she will replace the Russell whose mainmast has been damaged by lightning.

29 Oct 1836 in the Tagus.

11 Mar 1837 arrived Lisbon from Plymouth with arms, which have been transhipped to the Russell, which departed this morning for Cadiz and the Mediterranean.

16 Apr 1837 in the Tagus.

8 May 1837 the Talavera, Pique and Inconstant have arrived from a cruise and sailing trials.

18 Jun 1837 departed Lisbon, possibly for Cadiz and Barcelona.

23 Aug 1837 reported to be in Barcelona Roads.

29 Apr 1838, when 19 days from Gibraltar, spoke with the Thalia.

13 Feb 1839 Malta The Talavera is daily expected from Athens.

16 Mar 1839 at Malta.

Circa 26 Apr 1839 Malta departed for Corfu with Rodney, Bellerophon, and Castor to exercise their crews, following which the Talavera is to cruise in the Archipelago.

8 May 1839 Jaseur departed from Malta to Corfu with orders from Admiral Stopford for the Rodney, Talavera, Bellerophon, and Castor, not to return to Malta, but to proceed directly to the Levant where the Admiral expected to join them in due course with the remainder of the fleet.

19 May 1839 Malta the Rodney, Bellerophon and Talavera, departed from Corfu prior to the arrival of the Jaseur, with her despatches, arriving here on 15th inst., and the Castor on the 16th. The projected cruise has now been cancelled.

21 Jun 1839 arrived Valetta.

1 Jul 1839 Malta the Minden, Talavera, Asia, Castor, and Zebra departed and remained in the offing until the following day, when they were joined by Admiral Sir R Stopford, in the Princess Charlotte, the Rodney, Bellerophon, Pembroke, Tyne and Rhadamanthus and departed for the east, but destination unknown.

Sep 1939 at Besika Bay.

13 Oct 1839 it is reported that a malignant fever had appeared among the crews of both fleets at Besika Bay, but with most intensity on board the French vessels.

4 Nov 1839 is reported to have departed Besika Bay 23 Oct for a winter anchorage at Vourla.

13 Oct 1839 has arrived Malta from Beshika Bay, and will sail shortly for England ; one of her lieutenants has been tried by court-martial, but honourably acquitted.

28 Dec 1839 was to be paid off at Plymouth.

25 Jan 1840 Midshipman David Robertson (late of the Talavera), passed his examination for Lieutenant at the RNC on Wednesday.

11 Jul 1840 Mate George Boll Williams (passed 1829), late of the Talavera, promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.

27 Sep 1840 Devonport, a severe fire took place in the dockyard during which the Talavera was destroyed in her dock.
