5 Dec 1825, detained off the harbour of Rio de Janeiro the slave vessel Amizade de Santos, 75 tons, Joze Lopez de Bastos, Master, which was restored to her master after 24 hours when Lieutenant Hopkins discovered that the slave trade was still legal on the coast of Brazil. However, Brazil still being a very young country the arrest ruffled some Latin feathers and evolved into a minor diplomatic incident.
