3 Jan 1881, Chatham, has recently completed a thorough overhaul and proceeds shortly to Woolwich to load stores, troops for China, and to Portsmouth to embark RN personnel for the Magpie, Foxhound, Fly, and Vigilant being recommissioned at Hong Kong.

10 Jan 1881, has arrived at Woolwich.

22 Jan 1881, departed from Portsmouth for the Far East, via Vigo, where she'll transfer some stores to the Channel Fleet.

3 Feb 1881, arrived Vigo and departed for Malta.

7 Feb 1881, arrived Malta and departed for Aden, Trincomalee.

12 Feb 1881, arrived Port Said.

3 Mar 1881, arrived Trincomalee and departed on the 4th.

11 Mar 1881, was to depart Singapore for Hong Kong.

20 Mar 1881, arrived Hong Kong, departing 9th.

16 Apr 1881, arrived and departed Singapore.

25 Apr 1881, departed Trincomalee.

29 Apr 1881, departed Colombo.

19 June 1881, arrived at Sheerness, en route for Woolwich, landing a seaman at the hospital who fell from aloft off Deal, who wasn't expected to recover.

27 Jul 1881, the LS&GC Medal awarded to Quartermaster Francis H. Cull.

13 Sep 1881, Chatham, having undergone an overhaul will proceed shortly to Woolwich where she will take on stores etc. for the Mediterranean.

21 Sep 1881, arrived Woolwich to load ordnance.

30 Sep 1881, arrived Portsmouth to embark troops for Malta and Cyprus.

21 Nov 1881, arrived Woolwich. A man fell overboard whilst coming up the Thames, but was picked up alive by the ship's boat.

29 Nov 1881, has come round to Chatham, where she will receive another overhaul.

21 Dec 1881, arrived at Sheerness to embark troops for China.

24 Dec 1881, arrived Portsmouth where she embarked more troops.

1885 Landed part of crew as a part of the Naval Brigade to defend port of Suakin in the Red Sea.

1890 Particular Service as a Troop and store ship.

14 Dec 1891, Halifax, departed for England.

25 Dec 1891, Plymouth, arrived from Halifax, bringing home the old crews of the Champion and Pheasant from the Pacific Station, who left Vancouver on 5 Dec., crossing Canada by the Railway, they reached Halifax on 12 Dec. The ship's company from the Pheasant has disembarked, and the Tyne has departed to Portsmouth to disembark the Champion's ship's company.

1914-18 Stationed at Queensferry during the First World War as Destroyer Depot ship
