19 May 1839 arrived from Marseilles, and will sail for Greece and the Ionian Islands with his Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge and suite, following the arrival of the Volcano from Gibraltar."

16 Sep 1839 sails with mail for Alexandria, calling at Beyrout.

12 Oct 1839 The Volcano is at Alexandria, waiting the India mails. Our Alexandria letters state that the Volcano was obliged to leave without them, the day of their despatch from Bombay having been changed from the 12th to the 18th of September.

6 Jan 1840 Malta, the Volcano arrived from Gibraltar Thursday evening with the mails.

1 Mar 1840 Malta, departed for Marseilles with the East Indies mail for London.

15 Feb 1841 Plymouth, arrived from Barbadoes (14 Jan) and Antigua (20 Jan). She encountered a heavy gale on her passage home, during which her paddle-wheels were carried away, her sails blown to pieces, her boilers burst, and her boats washed overboard ; she must undergo repairs before sailing to Woolwich.

13 Mar 1841 Woolwich, paid off, having recently returned from the North American and West Indian station.

4 Aug 1841 repairs have been completed by Messrs. Seaward.

27 Aug 1841 has been commissioned.

28 Aug 1841 Lieutenant Joseph West, appointed to command the Volcano steam vessel.

28 Aug 1841 Woolwich, Mr. F. Gilbert has been appointed clerk in charge.

22 Oct 1841 arrived Portsmouth, from Woolwich, and departed for Plymouth and the Mediterranean later in the day.

24 Oct 1841 arrived Plymouth, from Portsmouth, returning the following day under the command of Mr. Mills, Master of the San Josef, Lt. Joseph West of the Volcano being ill.

26 Oct 1841 Portsmouth, arrived from Plymouth.

27 Oct 1841 departed Spithead for Plymouth with 40 landsmen raised at Portsmouth, and 12 seamen gunners.

30 Oct 1841 arrived Portsmouth.

4 Nov 1841 arrived at Plymouth with volunteers for the navy and has since departed for Liverpool.

5-11 Nov 1841 Plymouth, arrived from Liverpool, with newly raised men for the navy and has returned to Liverpool.

20 Nov 1841 put into Falmouth owing to strong adverse gales, and the following day attempted to get the packet Lapwing off shore at St. Anthony, where she's missed stays on the lee shore. In getting the Lapwing off both vessels sustained much damage to themselves and to the Lapwing's boats.

9 Dec 1841 is reported to have arrived Plymouth, from Liverpool, via Falmouth, with volunteers.

11 Dec 1841 Portsmouth, arrived from Plymouth, and left again on Monday ; Lieut. C. J. Featherstone appointed to command Volcano.

13 Dec 1841 departed Portsmouth, for Plymouth with newly raised men.

20 Dec 1841 Boatswain W. Wright appointed to the Volcano.

3 Jan 1842 arrived Portsmouth from the Eastward.

4 Jan 1842 arrived Plymouth from Portsmouth and returned to Portsmouth with supernumeraries for the Vindictive.

11 Jan 1842 arrived Woolwich, from Portsmouth, with the marines from the Powerful. However, the passage had its problems, and she ran aground near Margate, but having thrown her coals overboard and sending the marines ashore etc., she was got off, but the grounding had caused damage to her engines and boilers, and it was necessary to send the tug Monkey to tow her to Woolwich, where it is expected to take some time to repair her.

27 Jan 1842 replaced the Driver in dock at Woolwich.

4 Mar 1842 departed Portsmouth for Plymouth, with 70 men for the Agincourt.

c 10 Mar 1842 arrived Plymouth from Portsmouth with volunteers for the Agincourt and departed Liverpool for more volunteers.

14 Mar 1842 an article concerning the Blazer's run ashore on Seaford Head notes that the same Pilot put the Volcano ashore off Margate, see 11 Jan 1842 above.

21 Mar 1842 arrived Plymouth from Portsmouth with 42 men for the Agincourt and returned the same day.

22 Mar 1842 arrived Spithead from Plymouth, with seamen.

28 Mar 1842 to take the newly raised regiment from Portsmouth to Cowes, IoW today.

11 Apr 1842 was recently sent to Dungeness to help get the ship Beulah, with the 29th Regt., off shore.

3 May 1842 arrived Plymouth from Portsmouth and departed the same day for the Chops of the Channel to victual and water merchant vessels detained by the adverse easterly winds.

15 May 1842 arrived Plymouth from Portsmouth with men paid off from the President, and departed shortly afterwards for Liverpool with "refused men."

25 May 1842 arrived Plymouth from Greenock.

26 May 1842 departed Plymouth with supernumeraries for Portsmouth.

15 Jun 1842 arrived Portsmouth with a Royal party, led by the Queen Dowager on board, the usual salutes being made by the various ships in harbour at that time, the party later returning to Ryde IoW..

22 Jun 1842 departed Portsmouth for the Downs where the steamers Monkey and Lightning are attempting to put a caisson made by a Mr. Bush, on the Goodwin Sands.

25 Jun 1842 when she has completed her work on the Goodwin Sands, she is expected to depart Portsmouth for Bermuda with some engineers.

30 Jun 1842 arrived Spithead from the Goodwin Sands where, with other vessels, she had been attempting to install Mr. Bush's Casson, but it having been damaged during the installation, the matter had been adjourned until repairs had been made.

2 Jul 1842 the Hampshire Telegraph announced that the Queen Dowager donated �50 to the crew of the Volcano, who donated �4 10s. of that sum to the Portsea Orphan School for Seamen and Marines children.

9 Jul 1842 departed Spithead for Bermuda with Capt. Denison of the R.E., who is deputed to examine and report of the state of the fortifications of the Island.

11 Jul 1842 arrived Plymouth Sound from Portsmouth and departed the following day for Bermuda.

9 Aug 1842 arrived Bermuda from England with Captain Denison of the Royal Engineers who was to examine the public buildings and works on Ireland Island, and fix a site for new buildings, before returning to England in the Volcano.

20 Oct 1842 arrived Spithead from Bermuda (22 Sep) and Halifax (1 Oct).

17 Dec 1842 in Portsmouth harbour.

24 Dec 1842 a pension of �16 p.a. awarded to Able Seaman David Harris.

21 Mar 1851 had arrived at the River Nunez, from Sierra Leone, with the Commissioners who were to conclude a Treaty of Friendship with the native chiefs is this region.

11 Apr 1851 departed Sierra Leone.

12 Apr 1851 arrived Isles de Los.

16 Apr 1851 the King of the Pongos not having put in an appearance, relative to the signing of the Treaty, departed Isles de Los for Bulama Island, up the Rio Grande.

18 Apr 1851 arrived Bulama Island.

25 Apr 1851 departed Bulama Island with 24 slaves for Sierra Leone, but saw the French ship Betsey in distress making 10 inches of water an hour and her master seriously ill. Having received a written request put Lieutenant Robinson on board with a party of men to take the Betsey to Sierra Leone, and taking the French captain on board departed for Sierra Leone.

29 Apr 1851 arrived Sierra Leone and landed the slaves.

17 May 1851 detained in Lat. 11� 42' N. Long. 16� W., the French slave brigantine Eliza, Commence, master, which was sent for adjudication to the Vice-Admiralty Court at Sierra Leone and sentenced to be relinquished.

30 Nov 1851 late in the evening 97 officers and men, in the ship's boats, from the Harlequin and Volcano, were landed to destroy and burn the village and barracoons situated on the eastern point of land which commands the entrance to the Lagos River.

29 Dec 1852 boarded the US merchant schooner General Kalb, previously suspected as being a slave trader by the Harlequin, as admitted by her master, but sailing under the US flag, could not be detained.
