Employment of Assistant Engineers in Making Good Defects of Fleet.

Circular No. 398.
Admiralty, 10th December, 1859.

My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are of opinion, that it is desirable that the defects of the Fleet should, as far as possible, be made good by the Artificers of the Fleet ; and their Lordships therefore direct, that when repairs are necessary requiring superior mechanical skill, and which cannot be satisfactorily performed by the Carpenter's crew, Blacksmiths and Ship's Armourers, the same shall be executed, when practicable, by the Assistant Engineers of the Fleet.

My Lords are further pleased to direct, that when Assistant Engineers are thus employed, in actual manual labour, upon work unconnected with their own Ship, they shall be allowed increased Cheque Money at the undermentioned rates, which are to be charged to the Ship under repair in the usual way, viz. :-

  Of 10 working hours.
1st Class Assistant Engineers 6s. per diem
2nd Class Assistant Engineers 5s. per diem
3rd Class Assistant Engineers 4s. per diem

When employed during a part of the day, a proportionate allowance at the above rates is to be paid.

By Command of their Lordships.

C. Paget

To all Commanders-in-Chief, Captains, and Commanding Officers of H.M. Ships and Vessels.
